Can anyone give me a comparison of the Austin Winds Stage 470LT or 470HT to any of these Kanstul trumpets in terms of how they play, how dark, and how open:
- 1500 lp 25O bell 7 copper
- 1500-A lp 25 bell 7 bronze
- 1503 lp 25-O bell 72
- 1504 lp 43 bell 72
The Stage has a .470 bore and the Kanstul's are .460.
The Stage has a 5 1/16" lightweight bell, in either brass, bronze, or copper. The Stage HT has a heavy trim kit. |

The differences for a given player are certainly subjective and subtle. I would state that the overall effect of the AW is a darker and more subtle horn. I know that the AW folks change the bell and bracings of the Kanstul horns, along with some valve tweaking. I would summarize the distinction as follows: The Austin Winds 470 is to the Kanstul 1500s as a Ruf is to a Porsche. The changes that Austin Winds makes to the Kanstul (already a wonderful horn) milk every ounce of performance out of that original base design. Hope that helps. _________________ Doug Walsdorf

Can anyone just give me their review of the Stage 470LT and maybe the HT (heavy trim)? I'm most interested in the bronze bell. How it plays, how open, how dark, etc. Is the Stage 470 bell similar to the Kanstul bell 7? |

I have the 470LT with the heavy trim kit and copper bell. I bought sight unseen, but had Doug at Austin Winds play a couple things on a good field recorder on that and the ballad. Low range it is does have a dark but brassy sound. You can even get that air whisper on the notes if you can lip it that way. I love the horn over my old Bach 37 I had. It's a great great horn and my main driver. It has a solid high (and brighter high range). I've touched a screaming double high C with it. It really responds to cup depth on mouthpieces, so you can dial in your sound pretty easy. One thing though is that I'm not sure if Kanstul is making these horns anymore. I have no reason to look around anymore. |

Hi rpoutan, I'm a comeback player, and about a year ago bought the Austin Winds Stage 470LT with bronze bell (I have the heavy trim, but haven't used). It was my first pro horn purchase after a long time with a student bach. My trumpet teacher (after months of observation) mentioned she feels it has a lot of resistance and we've decided to look at getting a different horn for my growth needs. _________________ StudentofTrumpet/SingerSongwriter/SocialWorker

Well in this case it is.
While I love the Stage 470LT in Bronze, like Kanstul, it is no more. AW has been working on a new horn to fill that same dark, rich, but flexible when you want it, niche for a year now and while I will not get a chance to play the result until I am down there in April, what I know of this new design sounds pretty interesting.
(And since no one directly answered the question 8 years ago: the bell was unrelated to the Kanstul 7) _________________ Ron Berndt

I have the second to last one of the 470's made in Bronze (I think). Excited to see what Douglas is coming up with next. _________________ My go-to Trumpet and Flugel: Thane.
