Chicago During the Good Years

I listen to a lot of the Chicago Symphony during the hey day with Herseth, Charlie Geyer, and Phil Smith in the trumpet section and Jacobs heading up the low brass.

I was lucky enough to hear Solti and the CSO play the Mahler 5th in 1973 in San Francisco when they were playing the piece around the country. It was a memorable concert.--The New Yorker had had an artlcle about the concert at Carnegie Hall a few years earlier and reported that Solti had to lead the orchestra off stage because the audience wouldn't stop their applause. --The contrast in dynamics in the piece was breath taking. I remember that when Clevenger did the horn calls he took his hand out of the bell and lifted the bell to almost head level. (the next day they played Ein Heldenleben and the Beethoven 5th)

I believe the Mahler 5 and 6th recordings were issued around 1970 or 71. The record boxes had full pictures of the CSO on the covers. (I still have these) Besides Herseth, the trumpets were Cichowicz on 2nd, Scarlett on 3rd and Geyer on 4th. Clevenger was principal horn, Friedman on trombone and Jacobs on tuba.

I've got that Mahler 5 recording on London (Decca) talked about above. It's wonderful. I'm also enjoying a Reiner-conducted recording of Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" from 1954.

In addition, a friend loaned me an old LP of Reiner conducting Bartok's "Concerto For Orchestra" from around the same time. Although I didn't find that version on CD, I got a recording of the piece conducted by Boulez in 1992. There's plenty of trumpet and brass section playing on all these recordings.

I'm going to hear the CSO, with my brothers and our dad (brass players all), do Mahler 6 in April.
