Not long ago I had my 1972 lacquer Strad restored by Charlie Melk. Beautiful work! Sadly, a mouthpiece dropped off my music stand and hit the bell of my Strad while it was in the trumpet stand. I'd like to see if anyone knows of a trustworthy shop in Virginia or Metropolitan Washington, DC, that could help out by softening the appearance of the ding. It doesn't seem practical to ship it back/forth to Charlie. I travel around Tidewater, Richmond, and Northern Virginia enough to make it practical for me to drop it off at a shop in one of those areas for the repair.

Any suggestions on a good repair shop in those areas?

Grew up in NoVA.

Try CMC.... contemporary music center. They've been around for a LONG time. They might have to send it out, but they know people.

Jeff Bonk, MusicRepairWorks, in Lorton has done a lot of work for musicians in the U.S. Army's Pershing's Own as well as some emergency work for the Cory Band just before a concert and many others in the area. He does great work, but he's sometimes very busy.

I would reach out to Randy Mueller.

https://randyjmueller.com/contact/
He's a good guy, full of knowledge on all things trumpet. I am playing one of his mod's today. It's a great horn.

L and L Music in Gaithersburg, MD (DC suburb) has a great team of repair people as well if you're up that way. They just do brass and woodwinds.

Looks like you have gotten some great names here, but I would just note that I would not hesitate to send it to Charlie either. The shipping is expensive, but you know the work you will get.

If you live in Richmond, I would just go to Music & Arts on West Broad St. I’ve taken several horns there including my restored 1972 Strad. The bell had a big crease and they fixed it perfectly. They’ve done a great job on all my horns. Other players I know also take there horns there.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I decided to take my horn to Randy Mueller in Washington DC (NE). He's a super guy and he did a nice job with the repair. I got a lot of additional helpful information too. I'd be happy to go to him again if I have a similar need in the future.

100% agree - Randy is super knowledgeable and friendly and does great work. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone in the area who's looking to have a horn worked on.
