Hello Everyone!

I am amateur home trumpet player, just for my pleasure (music school 25 years ago). I already have trumpet Getzen Bravura 98B and cornet Olds Ambassador. These horns are good enough for me.

I want to buy my first flugelhorn on similar level of instrument, like my above horns. I am looking for a flugelhorn with typical for flugel - smooth, mellow sound (no like trumpet/trombone). I suppose that smaller bore will be required but I am not sure. I am planning spent no more than £400 and even less if is possible.

I think about second hand one, well known manufacturer, like for example: Olds, Besson or Bach 501D or a new chinese flug, like: Thomann FH-600G, Roy Benson FH-320G, Elkhart 100FHR or maybe any different one.

What would you recommend for me?

For what you are looking for, I think those are all reasonable choices. In your price range, I would also consider a used Getzen 895 Eterna or Capri Flugelhorn. Also a new Allora Flugelhorn (from wwbw.com) might be another reasonable option (although I'm not sure about shipping to the UK).

All above are too expensive for me. Thanks any way.

I played an old Yamaha 231 for many years. It had a lovely tone although it could be quite a bear to play sometimes. I paid like $500 for it.

If you can bump your price up a little bit, something like the Austin Custom Brass Doubler's flugel would likely be MUCH MUCH better than whatever dodgy Chinese horn you score on Ebay or whatever.

Good luck!

Put the Dillon flugels in the mix. Under $500, plus of course whatever it takes to get it into the UK.

Has anyone here had experience with the Conn Vintage? I am starting my search as well. Looking forward to trying several.

It looks reasonable but Austin hornes (Dillons as well) are available in US only. Taxes and eventually returns would be expensive.

Today I got Besson Sovereign.
I didn't have too much time today but quickly tried and I'm very happy. Looks very nice, it's in really excellent condition, sounds quite smooth on my Wick 4F. Tuning is very good and surprisingly easy blow, even in high registers.
Thank you guys for your posts.

I had a Besson that I bought about 10 years ago. Rose copper brass bell. I don't know if it was a Soverign or not, but at the time it cost me about $400 at WW&BW. It was an excellent flugelhorn. Well built, played in tune and had a gorgeous tone. If I hadn't taken a long hiatus and sold all of my horns, I'd be playing it today...

Keep in mind that Couesnon made the Elkhart flugelhorn, the older version, not the Bach Asian one made for the European market lately. They are small bore, marked with the usual craftsmen's initials, and they play well. I have two of them, and old silver one with the French taper pipe, and a newer brass one with the large Morse taper pipe. I paid $200 for the silver one off TH Marketplace, and $350 for the brass one, in unplayed condition, off the bay.
