If you're looking for beginning trumpet books start your search at Abebooks.com

They're a British-based consortium of world-wide independent book sellers and you can find great bargains for under $5 with fast and free shipping.

Not just beginner books, either. I've found materials on jazz improv, music history, miusician biographies and autobiographies - the list goes on.

I "found" Abe Books about a year ago and have started patronizing them as an alternative to Amazon. Similar concept in that they list books from a variety of sellers. To date, I've bought at least a half dozen novels and non-fiction books and have been very pleased with the web site set up and customer service.

Hadn't thought about looking for trumpet stuff -- thanks!!

You bet!

My best find on Abe.books has been the autobiography of Pops Foster, the legendary bass player whose career spanned 1899 to 1969. The book is one of the best about the life of a musician I've ever read because it is a largely unfiltered transcript of interviews he gave the author and his descriptions of life in New Orleans in the early 1900s are priceless.

He recalls, for example, that the city had dozens of dairy barns which the owners would clean up so they could hold dances for which they would bring in beer and food and bands and sell tickets.

The music and dancing and drinking would go on for hours until the cows, which had been penned up behind the barn, would start mooing because they needed to be milked. That mean't the dancing was over and everybody had to go home to bed.

In all the reading I've done about the origins of traditional jazz I'd never read that!

Sorry to be the deliverer of bad news, but Amazon owns Abebooks. I suppose they own everything these days.

Had no idea. As big as AZ has become I shouldn’t be surprised. It seems odd, however, that it would want to compete with itself.

I don't think they are competing with each other, its more about widening the customer base and do more sales and with that earn more money.
