What a great etude! Enhanced by your great playing. I love those precise but never harsh fronts on you notes, just the perfect touch on this one. Great stuff. Thanks for the shining example.

Wow! This one was really special. Your playing is always stellar and beautiful, but today there was that extra 1% of exquisite tone. What a beautiful sound, the ideal sound for the etude too.

Wonderful. Really nice on the Bb. Is there any particular reason you chose the Bb for this one?

In the hands of many of us, I believe this would sound like work; you make it sound like play. Great work and great lesson to us all.

Episode #365

https://youtu.be/3N3wJg3m-qQ

Well, it's time to wrap up this little project. I thought about how best to bring it to a close, and decided to go out the way I started - with a beautiful Collins Performing Etude. Phil posted a couple of samples on Facebook in March of 2020, which is what started all of this. As you know, he has provided a great deal of the material for this series. I am grateful for these gifts, as well as his friendship and support. Phil has been a huge source of inspiration to me since my undergrad years in Cincinnati. If you haven't ordered your own copies of his Performing Etudes, do so. You won't be disappointed.

A special thanks to fellow comrades-in-etudes, Chris Smith and Jack Burt. I think we really pushed each other to be better, to stay the course. It has been great getting to know both of you through our mutual suffering and machinations.

Thanks to all of you that have indulged me along the way. Your kind words and encouragement kept me on track when it would have been very easy to just quit. This was truly a grind. I'm glad I did it, but I have no desire to repeat it. The LA Phil has started on a path towards "normalcy", and this project fulfilled its intended purpose: I feel ready, physically and mentally, to return to playing for live audiences. My first opportunity is this Saturday!

Finally, I would be remiss without acknowledging my family, who not only put up with the daily etudes (they had to listen to all of the takes that didn't make the videos, too), but also helped by allowing me to feature them in the intros. You guys are the best.

Take care, everyone.

This one was right up there with your best.

I have enjoyed every one, learned from all and come to appreciate your playing in a profound manner. Thank you very much.
I hope you will leave these up on the Internet for reference for a long time.

I am happy that you can get back to live playing (it is good for us all), but I will certainly miss listening to your wonderful solo playing in these videos. Your grind and determination created a wonderful source for trumpet players to refer to.
If there is a silver lining to this mess we have been through you are certainly a big part of it. Many of us would never have had the chance to experience your great playing otherwise.

Thank you again and best wishes for wonderful concerts with the LA Phil.

We should thank you Jim! You have truly been so inspiring helping us to make it through this long tunnel, seemingly with no end; at least here in Sweden the light at the end was at many a time the train coming....
But now, very conveniently in harmony with summer´s coming up, the passage seems to be done, this time..
For me personally I´ve come to realize that the singing, dolce, soulful delicate quality in your sound, is exactly what I´ve striven for during my entire playing life. Having played since 1957 it´s a true blessing having found
a " live example". In my heart I´m a dedicated 'brassbander' the cornet always was my first love. When I began playing in big bands 50 years ago some people wished that I played more "dirty" as one of my bigband buddies put it. I understand that he wanted me to fill the horn, use every opportunity to highlite the differences between the cornet and the trumpet. So I did - but I fail to see why you shouldn´t keep your personal voice.
So - in all thanks a lot - not only for the music but also for the funny and entertaining ways of presenting it!
