Episode #61

https://youtu.be/gbB70_uTxzc

Endurance, control when tired, trying to playing similar phrases slightly different. Keeping good pitch clarity downstairs while not getting "chewy" was challenging - we often tend to throw the notes "somewhere down there" because we are not as likely to miss in the low register (space between partials) - we get lazy. Trying to end strong - don't miss the last high B!

Nicely done. All well said here about our tendencies, but your playing made it all look so easy. If only that were true.

Episode #62

https://youtu.be/Vx9NLMowq90

The biggest challenge for me was flexibility and staying consistently centered on all the intervals across about two octaves. I had to really concentrate on trying to get enough pop on the low stuff. After hearing it now (it was recorded a couple of weeks ago) I would have probably played it a little shorter. It also sounds like I'm a little out of focus - not getting a consistent a color throughout as I would have liked. Some days are better than others...

Endurance was definitely an issue on this one. Another big challenge for me is playing low and soft when I am tired, particularly articulated notes. The octave A slur on the end was a tester...

Did you record these in groups? Or are you just releasing them on a delayed schedule so you can evaluate them?
Nice work again on a difficult etude. I did not really hear any loss of focus, so perhaps you are being too hard on yourself.

I am trying to build up a reserve so I don't feel pressured to finish one (it's psychological, because I always get at least one). This frees me up to attempt harder ones - if I don't quite get it in one day, I can revisit it the next morning and still get another one later in the day.

Once I pair it with the video, that's it. It goes in the queue and I may listen to it when I'm slapping the fronts and backs on before posting on YT. Sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised, sometimes I'm disappointed - just like concerts.

Episode #64

https://youtu.be/Aw-ub-GxrOY

This one was harder than I thought it was going to be, lol. Maybe I'm getting a little weaker as this goes on - I may need to break to work on fundamentals and strength again. Working on maintaining good pitch clarity and not allowing notes to bend in the direction of the next notes. Would have liked to have finished stronger, but it's a long haul - with 10 seconds more space or an edit, it would have been a very different ending.

Nice music. More feeling of music than etude. Some of the drops could be perilous too, depending on the fingering. Great work.

Episode #65

https://youtu.be/5HdNf5R94NQ

Endurance was a challenge here, particularly being able to play low and soft near the end - the last Ab was actually easier than the previous Eb at the bottom of the staff. I had difficulty making this one "open up", probably because I'm an orchestral player trained to do his thing withing certain confines. I tried several cracks at this one, trying to make it sound more dramatic and free, but it always lapsed into something more conservative than I would have wanted had I been a paying customer...

Very nice. You actually held it together remarkably well. You kept it musical even when you were getting a little gassed as you say. That is really great. Very hard to keep musical when things turn against you a bit. Wonderful hearing you tackle these difficult etudes.

Trying to dig out every note - there are so many things that can go wrong in an etude like this.

Your dissatisfaction with this one is very interesting. I see what you are saying, but at the same time, the etude is presented in such a sensitive manner, I am not sure that opening it up would improve it.
By the way, I still find your tone, sound and sensitivity on the Bb to be stunning. It really is a great sound. I find that so few trumpet players want to play with this kind of sound these days, and it is really refreshing to hear it. Music to my ears, despite current fashion, which may be what is pushing your dissatisfaction.

This one was fun - just trying to keep a good, consistent pop on all the notes throughout, playing straight down the horn. I went down to one microphone on this one - going forward that is what I'm doing. The sound quality is going to vary widely in the next few weeks as I try to dial in new gear and settings.

Boy, this one is tough. Defies expectations all over the place. Nice work in a tough place.

Mostly about control and connection. Probably the biggest challenge was playing lower and softly near the end, as usual. Soft low Cs have a way of quacking on me sometimes.

Episode #69

My goal was to maintain a robust, orchestral-type sound throughout. Challenges include navigating large leaps and trying to immediately stabilize the note (no overshooting), particularly the low notes. To some degree endurance was a factor due to the dynamic, which was generally around forte throughout.

Good job on the new intro. I bet you have hit on many a trumpet player's spouse's fantasy!
This one pretty much lives up to your Trumpet Herald name Mr. Clean. Great job with some of those large intervals.
