Nice, crisp and articulate. I have been told by a trumpet colleague that your videos are a stellar example of how to approach notes. This was another example.

Episode #114

https://youtu.be/xc-bc3XkKX4

Airing out orchestral-esque forte, trying to sustain that energy throughout the etude (except where the dynamic drops). Concentrating on keeping focus and energy when the dynamic drops to piano.

Episode #115

https://youtu.be/7mMYvL3elZg

Awkward slurred arpeggiated figures that require some semblance of predictability to time what follows them. Cross-finger writing. Range. There's plenty to chew on in this one.

Wonderful. Superb in every way. I was delighted with your choice of pauses for breaths. This is a lovely etude and you milked it for all it was worth.

Coordination was the biggest challenge for me on this one - trying to keep fingers and tongue in-sync.

That was just a plain nasty one Jim. Kudos to you for taking it on. Many, many places to get tangled up and a rhythmic challenge along with the range. Wow.

Nice work with the leaps and required fast recoveries. You make it sound easy when just looking at the paper looks much more difficult. Particularly liked the way you handled the transition after the run of sixteenth notes into the G and octave leap, really great handling there.

Episode #117

https://youtu.be/MsxpuBFhX_I

The biggest challenges for me were timing - when to re-articulate coming off a series of slurred notes - in fact, I'm sure I cheated on some of these. Trying to keep fingers even. Pacing, character.

Episode #118

https://youtu.be/tcJeFy7hN88

Biggest challenges were trying to maintain stability on the large leaps, and to some degree, endurance and its impact on note/articulation quality.

Can't say if you "cheated," but great finger work, nice and economical.

Episode #120

https://youtu.be/Va9tGmTjwRY

This one is tricky. Navigating above the staff has it's own unique challenges, particularly the B-C-Bb passages when they appear - very easy for one of those notes to explode. Endurance is definitely an issue, particularly on the recap. Staying mentally focused knowing you'll have to do it all over again if you make a major mistake - big distraction, again, particularly on the recap.

The sound is a little wonky on this one - this happened in the midst of my quest for the audio holy grail, and may be my least favorite. Better stuff is right around the corner...

Almost like two different pieces slapped together to throw you off. Nice job navigating them -- the bookends are really tough and then Brandt tries to put you to sleep in the middle -- which is very nice. I would say the sound is very direct rather than wonky, a little harsh -- a lot like early CDs, but your playing still comes though.

All sorts of challenges in this one. Dynamics, range, response. Great etude but not easy.

Deft finger work, so economical, and great handling of the low notes to keep them in the musical vein with the rest. Really enjoyed how you kept this one musical and lyrical. Must have been tempting to do otherwise.
