You really lived up to your screen name on this one. Really clean picc work. You make it look so easy. The only hint that you are working is the eyebrows! _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Jim, a note of thanks for a truly historic thread, and of course the content that you are providing - it's great stuff and nice to have the legacy of not-that-often-recorded material available played so well.
I admire your playing and the work to produce these videos and post publicly every day from your practice room. Not many would be prepared to present their daily practice routine to the world nor keep up the output.
Great stuff. |

What a great example of how this should be done. Is it as easy for you as it sounds? You appear to just glide through it. _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

Just beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I have as much a chance of playing that well as doing a heart transplant! Oh well. |

Your handling of the figures in this etude was amazing. Obviously a product of your years of study and experience. Like the cornet sound here.
With something like this do you scan through it and mentally plan your approach to the figures or is it so ingrained you can just do it automatically as you go along? _________________ Bb: Schilke X3L AS SP, Yamaha YTR-6335S

The Belloli etudes have been tricky for me, because I don't know them at all. Since a lot of my music is in my studio at Colburn, I was searching the internet for free etudes and ran across them - they are actually written for french horn, so they are not exactly idiosyncratic. They often zag when you think they are going to zig. Since I put a fair amount of pressure to produce at least one video per day, I don't give myself much time to develop new material (though that is changing because I have long ago exhausted most of my go-to etudes). I target the traps and run them until I know what to expect when the red light goes on, but there is still a degree of anxiety when those passages approach, particularly if they are well into the piece, like mid-way down the 2nd page. The thought of having to throw out an entire take because of a late slip is soul crushing. They take a lot out of me.
I usually have to toss the first take or two on Belloli because the technique is not clean enough - it is a type of playing I have not done since at least college, maybe high school, but I could say the same about some of the other etudes as well (Arban characteristic, Bousquet, etc). Anyway, it is getting harder to pick out rep - sometimes that is the most torturous part of the process. I would really like to just go back to work, but this country's weird resistance to wearing masks has made this an impossibility for the foreseeable future. _________________ Jim Wilt
