To Gig or Not

Our 7-piece trad band hasn’t rehearsed or performed since February. A local senior residence has asked us to play for an hour outdoors at their location.

Everyone in our group assures me they are symptom free.

Would you accept or decline the gig?

That's a high risk group you will be playing for. Not saying what you should do, but if it was me, I'd respectfully decline. Put it off for a better day, as it were.

This is going to be a personal choice. Some may want to be more cautious, while other may not. If you want to play, if you are following the appropriate guidelines, and if everyone is comfortable with the arrangements, then you should go ahead and do it.

My band played an outdoor fundraiser gig last week. We performed as a trio, we played outside, and we "socially distanced". The gig went great.

I will add that for our gig, I kept the band to a trio, to make it easier to socially distance. Also, we set up about 12 feet apart, which made it a bit hard to hear each other.

Bands are loud. Set up far from your audience. Maintain generous social distance. You’re all adults, including the residents, and can be responsible for the choices you make.

My 7 piece Latin Jazz Band has been asked to perform in June,one place would be outdoors at a resort,and another indoors in a club,although that one is tentative..My thoughts are to go ahead with the outdoor one,and they assured me there will be plenty of room on the stage,and we would be actually piping the music to the customers rooms,so theres little worry there..Caution of course entering and leaving the place;
The indoor one has me and the rest of the band asking questions..such as the opinion I have heard that this virus might be spread around by air conditioning,Although that is still a question mark; Do we want to take a chance with that? The jury is still out,although we are leaning towards passing on that one;
Hopefully these questions get answered soon; I love to play,but at what price?

I recall a concert a couple years ago in which from the front row I could sense, with my nose, the gunk or whatever olfactory excesses that had been emanating from the not-well-maintained saxophones.

Wind instruments are aerosol generators. Musicians performing on wind instruments breathe quite intensively, at the very least, on the inhale (unless you practice circular breathing). Both practices are risky in the days of the coronavirus.

Have you tried playing with the nose (but not the mouth) covered with a mask and breathing in through the nose? Or, perhaps, cut out a small circular hole (support the hole and prevent further tearing with a grommet) in the face mask to fit the mouthpiece shank through?

First I'd consider whether anyone in the group is a 'high risk' category. Age, chronic illness, other family members sick, any symptoms, etc.
If everybody's low risk and healthy, then I might consider it under the following conditions:
-band members are well distanced from ANYONE from the facility (clients, admins, etc.)
-band members are well distanced from each other
-facemasks worn when not playing
-never enter the inside of the facility
-nobody from the band gets any food, beverage or such from anyone else

But that's me.....

I can't imagine what they were thinking when they asked you to perform. You're in an area, unlike here, that has a lot of virus and an institution with a high-risk demographic wants to invite outsiders to their campus? The liability risk is enormous.

I hope you get to play the gig at a safer time.

Laughing my butt off right now.

We are a 15 piece rock and roll band, I'm 60 and they keep me around because I'm young enough to be a roadie. We have 3 members over 80, and most are around 65-70.

We have had 2 rehearsals in 3 months, and need a 40 acre field to respect social distancing.

We are playing a gig May 30th, 6-10 PM, in one of the few places large enough to accommodate us. They normally will seat 800, will have around 300 and we will be taking up the entire previous dance floor to just seat the band.

We. Don't. Care. This will essentially be a open rehearsal, that they are going to pay us to do. Our lead guy told them, we are rusty, not polished, if you want, let us move it back.

They said, We. Don't. Care. They are so starved for a live band, and we have played there several times before, love our set list and our vibe, just come out and have fun.

It is going to be a schmit show, from a performance perspective. We are sooo, not ready. Again, We. Don't Care.

What happens, happens, and suspect may be one of the best gigs we ever do. We are all so hungry for it, will be clams for days, but will be such a blast for those of us playing the back 9, to just get out and perform again.
