Wow. Absolutely horrible news.
I saw Wallace Roney play live in Central Park back in 2016, with Roy Haynes. They played Dizzy Atmosphere and Star Eyes, I remember. He sounded just awesome up there, playing with one of the great drummers. Later, my girlfriend and I stood outdoors in the pouring rain to hear the great McCoy Tyner headline the show.
I love his album, "No Job Too Big Or Small."

An amazing player and a huge loss.

I heard him at Takoma Park, MD. Great player. Too young and for a stupid reason. Our hearts go out to his family. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

So sad. Was able to see him a few times at a small venue in Jersey......very nice person as well. He passed with way too much music still inside. |

My wife and I got to see him at the Side Door in CT last June and talk horns, Miles, and Blossom Dearie with him.
So glad we went and so sad that will never happen again. |

Heard "Time After Time" from his 1993 album Crunchin' late one night coming home from a gig and was hooked right away. Great lyricism.
Went to see him at the Jazz Showcase here in Chicago last year and he played and sounded great. His health seemed to be failing though as his breathing was labored and his steps were slow and seemingly pained.
He will be missed. _________________ Del Quadro Grizzly

Such a horrible news. He was my hero since I first heard his recordings 20+ years ago. I had a pleasure to hear him live twice , only twice

I moved to Boston in 1980 and about my third night in town I went to a student concert at Berklee. If my memory serves me right the pianist was Makoto Ozone, Robin Eubanks was on Trombone, and a kid named Wallace Roney was on trumpet. I think there were a couple more heavies in the group but I can't remember who. Anyway, the band was just evil.
I distinctly remember thinking that the trumpet player, who'd I'd never heard of, was going to go places.
Several years later I was sitting 3 feet from him at the Regattabar listening to him and Bill Pierce eating up the Tony Williams book. Amazing.

Dreadful news. He also took a lot of knowledge with him.
I was only in touch with him a few months ago and he told me a bit about his involvement with Leblanc when they were developing the Martin Committee and did not have the benefit of the primary Bell Mandrell to work from.
He will be sadly missed. |
