I have a couple of Purviance and a Bob Reeves mouthpiece that are older and need replating. I've also been thinking of selling them, and I don't know whether it makes more sense to sell them as-is. Actually, I don't know what the market is like for vintage (?) trumpet mouthpieces, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shiny new usually brings a higher price than old and crusty. But you'll likely not get back what you put into them.

Both are valued but neither is likely a collectible. I agree that unless they are particularly bad I'd probably try to sell then as-is.

Hi MNDrums,

In our experiences, you can look at it two ways:

If the mouthpiece is dented, scratched, and missing plating (no matter the vintage) some type of work will be needed to make it playable.

If it is in good shape, you will have a higher success rate of selling the pieces for a price you like.

If the mouthpieces are in OK overall shape, sell them as is. If they need touch-up work, I would send them to the fine folks at Bob Reeves Mouthpieces and tell them you want your vintage Purviance and Reeves pieces restored to their original state. There is no one that will do a better job with those specific pieces.

Hope this helps!
