For anyone planning to play 1st trumpet in Pictures at an Exhibition, here's a good way to get ready for Samuel Goldenburg and Schmulyle on a piccolo. This is particularly useful if, like me, you have little experience playing piccolo trumpet. My teacher recommended playing the excerpt - without transposing - on Bb, C, D, Eb (or as many of these as you have), then finally on the piccolo. This way you get the feel for the rhythm, phrasing and fingering without taxing yourself unduly. It worked quite well for me.
