I'm looking for early (i.e. before he got his teeth knocked out) Chet recordings of him playing bebop solos, real bebop. I want to spend money on some more Chet CD's and these kinds of recordings seem to be missing from my Chet collection. Basically I want recordings where Chet's chops are being showcased.
I love his ballad playing for sure, but can you guys help me find more recordings where he plays like in the attached video (live in Paris, 1963). The tunes don't have to be uptempo necessarily, if he's playing double-time lines on a medium swinger, that's great too!

easy to find.
the four record he made for pacific are collected in the a set called "the pacific years". All bebop basically
smokin with the chet baker quintet is also released in a collection with a different name.
the record called "candy" is great and also out on video which is on youtube
"mr. B" is the greatest chet record of all with definitive recordings of several great tunes, like dolphin dance
all this is on apple music or spotify etc
I searched Amazon for "the pacific years" and the CD set was $199 (too rich for me). I'm sure it's cheaper to download, but when it comes to the greats I will only buy physical media because I love the liner notes and photos. I am going to look into buying all of the Pacific albums individually for sure though, so thanks for the heads up!
I do have "Smokin" and it's great, only negative for me is he plays flugle on that entire album and I definitely prefer him on the trumpet.
"Candy" and "Mr. B" are both nice but to my ears he wasn't playing the horn nearly as well the years after his teeth got knocked out. I've never heard any recordings from the 80's where he played the horn like he did in that Paris video above from 1963 _________________ "Run towards your problems, not from them"

If you don't already know it, The Chet Baker Quartet with Russ Freeman is a great album/CD.

About five years ago I found an entire album (on youtube) of Chet with Charlie Parker. The fidelity was less than wonderful, and there was another sax player on there (if memory serves) who made for rather tiresome listening.
Both Bird and Chet played way differently from their usual, if I'm recalling correctly. It seemed as though they both inspired each other to new heights.
I was flat on my back recovering from surgery and haven't revisited that recording since, but I know it exists because I listened to it.
Okay, I just went and looked it up, and here's what I found:

The album "Chet is back" from 1962.
Listen to "Blues in the closet" his playing was close.

I've got it and love it. Heck of a band and Johnny Griffin plays his butt off, too. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
Just added it to my Amazon cart, I'm about to order around $140 worth of Chet CD's! _________________ "Run towards your problems, not from them"

Great recommendations, especially "Chet in New York." Per the the biography "Deep in a Dream," Chet during that period really wanted to prove to other players he could play hard bop, and took that session seriously.
I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually like Chet's later career better. To me, his improv sounded a bit more focused. His playing on "Chet in Tokyo," "Chet's Choice", or "The Last Great Concert" come to mind. _________________ Brent

Being a Chet fan and reading this thread I immediately went to Amazon to look for Chet's The Pacific Years. The CD was only $200.00
Good Lord. Looked a bit more, saw one for a bit cheaper but unavailable. Same with Smoking'. $35.00 and unavailable. _________________ Gunnar Christensen

Instead of looking for a box-collection for $200.00, could you get a better bargain by buying the singles albums that compromise the boxed set? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird
