Got a lead on a kuhlohorn (German round flugelhorn) and I've scoured the interwebs and this forum for information. There are still a few questions I can't seem to find answers for:

-What are the chances it's a low pitch A440 horn? I don't wanna tangle with re-tuning from A455 etc. According to Wikipedia, Germany has been using A440 since the 1800s--can anyone verify that?

-What are German-make rotary horns from the early 1900s like, in terms of build/quality/sound? Is it worth taking a chance on something I can't play before I buy? I realize that's a matter of opinion, but any feedback will be appreciated.

If you have experience playing a kuhlohorn, I would love to hear about it. I played through high school and some in college on a Bach TR200 and was never really happy with the sounds I could make with it. When I started playing again I got a cornet to be a little mellower. So far I like it, but it sounds like a flugelhorn may be even more in line with what I'm looking for, so I'm on the hunt. A new horn is not in reach so I'm trying to be creative without being desperate. =)

Thanks everybody!

Re: A440, I heard back from a music historian that Germany went to A440 around 1885. So that’s good news for all of us contemplating period German horns. 😝

If you buy an instrument that's 100+ years old, it will likely have stuck slides, leaky valves and a host of other problems. A low price may be negated by the cost of repairing problems.
You're better off buying something used of more recent vintage.

Never played one so far, but being in Germany they come up often on local and eBay lists. Some are top, some less so from what I hear and read.

These are some trusted sources for new and used Kuhlos (yes, they come new as well, but pricey).

If I had the money and need for one I would go for a new one ...

I have a Kulohorn, engraved F. Schediwy Ludwigsburg 1937 Pz Regt 2 Nr 6 in very good condition, paid US$350 for it several years ago on ebay.

Tone is between Cornet and Flugel, requires a German shank style mouthpiece to get best results, I have it more as a curio than a playing instrument.

Cheap Kulohorns on ebay usually require serious repair.

Regards, Stuart.

If you really want a decent kuhlohorn, get a Miraphone. I know someone selling their one (few years old) or any decent Bielefield or Dotzauer ones are good.

How about a used Dotzauer?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/lackiertes-Kuhlohorn-mit-Trigger/283929178437

The name looks machine-stamped, but it’s definitely not their current emblem. Any idea how old it might be? Or is there a Dotzauer besides Meister Dotzauer?
