Just wondering what were some of the most requested songs in any of the bands you've played with? |

I though they were requesting "les Misérable", but they were actually just asking me to play less miserable. _________________ '75 Bach Strad 180ML/37

In my day, "Cherry Pink" was requested quite a bit. |

You know, come to think of it, excepting the following story, I am not sure I've ever had any requests, regardless of style, except for two morons who came backstage during a formal concert band Christmas concert requesting with some aggressiveness, some Glenn Miller.
Funny request story. I was on a combo gig one night when, on a break, a very big and slightly inebriated man came up and said, "Play Green River". We kind'a looked at each other and nobody knew the tune, so we blew it off.
On the next break this same guy, getting drunker now, came up and slurred, "Play Green River". Again we sluffed it off.
On the last break, this same, and rather big and pretty drunk by now guy comes up and insisted, "I said, play Green River". We figured it would be hazardous to our health, so this time we asked him to sing it.
So he began, "Gureeen River, wider than mile . . " _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I find that when playing jazz in bars and restaurants, requests come in two flavors.
1) Completely drunk guys trying to show off to their date requesting the only jazz tune they've ever heard of. This is generally Misty, Saints Go Marching In (when we're playing bebop lol), Moon River, Stardust, or As Time Goes By. Once in a while La Vie En Rose. Sure, dude. (Although as long as he's not rude about it, I'm happy to help him get lucky. Why not?)
2) Completely drunk jazz musicians in the audience that want to show off to the band how hip they are by requesting either an insanely difficult or otherwise inappropriate tune for the venue. No one in this nice relaxed restaurant wants to hear Giant Steps in 7, bro, please sit down and finish your meal.
The very, very occasional time when a jazz fan sincerely wants to hear one of their favorite tunes are quite welcome! I'm always happy to oblige. It's the completely drunk idiots above that get me annoyed.
And of course, all requests are honored with a very conspicuous glance towards the tip jar...
Actually, now that I think about it, the most requested tune is definitely Happy Birthday. We play that one a lot at the bars - so often that I made a special arrangement!
Cheers, folks _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet

Dizzy Gillespie used to open a note from the audience saying it was a request, and then he'd read it aloud, slowly: "Dis band... should ... disband...." _________________ Dan Pearlman

Loved Kehaulani's stories of requests. It wasn't me being drunk and acting stupid either. Gurreen River is precious, but it means I will never look at Audrey Hepburn the same on tv again. In the city band I played in for years it alwsys seemed to be the military medley songs that people loved and a simple tune that kind of became the bands theme, Theme to the Andy Griffith show by Earle Hagen. Also musical medleys.
On a serious note, I just passed 35 years of sobriety in AA and always turned down the chance to play in small gig bands or in Minnesota Polka bands for fear that I would be the one telling the group leader, "Hey, can't we play the "Gurreen River Polka?" _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

60s "Tequila" / "Watermellon Man" / "The Twist"
70s "Proud Mary" (#1 by a long shot) / "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown" / "Feelings"
80s "Beat It"
All decades "Misty" _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

Free Bird and Stairway to Heaven. We played the version of Stairway that uses the horn section for the "guitar solo". (I learned it from a Lon Bronson recording, and I believe he got it from Frank Zappa) _________________ '75 Bach Strad 180ML/37

The most requested by far is Happy Birthday.
The second most requested is Three Blind Mice.
Audiences never cease to amaze me with their sophistication. |

When I was playing in a R&B/Disco band back in the 70s and 80s, it always astounded me how frequently people asked us to play Rush, like that was going to happen. _________________ "I'm an engineer, which means I think I know a whole bunch of stuff I really don't."
