Thanks for posting! I attended one of Bill’s Masterclasses at Vanderbilt University around this time. It was an amazing experience.
I still have the handouts and refer to them often. He was kind and gracious.
One anecdote of his I recall (unsure if it’s on this video) involved a trick he used to do on the subway when traveling to work. He procured a trumpet valve cluster that he attached to a shoulder holster (originally meant for a pistol). During train rides he would finger excerpts and exercises with his hand inside his coat jacket. He always enjoyed the cautious glances from the fellow subway riders who had to have thought he was a hitman with a very itchy finger.

| I remember taking the subway with Vacchiano. It must have been after a lesson. There was another trumpet player with us. Vacchiano had an Amati piccolo trumpet with him. While we were in the train, Vacchiano decided to show the other trumpet player his horn. The other guy told Vacchiano not to take it out of the gig bag. Vacchiano ignored him and took it out. This was in the 70's when crime was really out of control in NYC, above and below ground. Nothing happened. Still,if you take out anything valuable on the subway, you are asking for trouble. Apparently, Vacchiano was not easily intimidated. I heard this about him while he was at work as well. Conductors didn't intimidate him either. |
