Hi All,

Recently I scored an early 90s Bach cornet which appears to be NOS (new old stock). It does not appear that this horn was played much, if at all. The valves and slides do not appear to be broken in, and the lacquer is near perfect, with only 2 brown spots, each about the size of a pin head.

My questions are:

How durable was Bach lacquer Bach applied during the early 90s ?

Any advice as to how to keep it looking good for as long as possible ?

Thanks !!

It's pretty much the same as the lacquer used currently. Frankly, lacquer is not super durable, though the current epoxy stuff lasts longer than the old nitrocellulose stuff. The Bach 184L that I used to play in a brass septet had some minor contact wear after about 15 years or so.

Pretty much every lacquer horn I have that is reasonably played often and is over 15 years old has some wear.

Wipe it down after playing. Don't use a valve guard.

Thanks for the replies.

Per the request, here are 2 pictures:

For anyone that's interested it's a Bach 184G (gold brass bell) XL bore. I think that's a fairly rare configuration.
