I'm seeing that the Giardinelli 10S rim ID is around 0.630" versus the modern Bach 3C is 0.665". FWIW I find the stock Yamaha 4 rim feels fairly 3C-like so if you try any they will feel similar other than ID. The modern 3C feels in the range of the Yamaha 16C4. If that turns out to be comfortable but too big it would be easy to go with a 14C4 or 14B4 which could be a good compromise.

FWIW these are pretty specific recommendations based on my progression from pieces in the Schilke 6A4a range all the way up to a Bach 1.5C, which turned out to be too big and tanked my range in a way that wasn't coming back. A Yamaha size 14 rim gave me all the sound I wanted without being too big.

Having previously had a philosophy of sticking with one mouthpiece, maybe the time is right to widen my view! I'll give the 3C as good a go as I can but then maybe refine if I need to, so thanks for your recommendations.

If the Bach 3C feels too large after playing it for a few weeks, try a Yamaha 14B4 or Schilke 14B.

Thanks for this, these look like popular recommendations so I'll be sure to try them if I need to go further afield than the 3C!

Some 25 yrs ago I did a jingle date with Lew Soloff for Hunts tomato paste.
Lew took out a pouch with like 20 different mouthpieces and tried each one out before choosing the "right" one for the session. He sounded incredible on each one and that was his 3rd session for the day so far...at only 11am !!!

The "right one" that time was a Giardinelli screw rim I think maybe a custom piece. 3C size, opened throat, shallow cup.

What's "the BE"? I feel like I'm missing something significant ...

BE = Balanced Embouchure
It's a method. Lots of info on the forum on it.

If you really 'came back on track' then it's questionable whether you need to be concerned with Balanced Embouchure - because (as I understand it) its purpose is to GET people on track.

You probably developed your own 'embouchure technique' when you played earlier.
Are you still using that same technique?
Did it work well before and works well now - especially for playing higher than the G above the staff?
Do you get lip pain or injury from using too much mouthpiece pressure?

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.
