Hi, my name is Bill and the trumpet was my first instrument. Back in grade school. Back in the 1950s. I currently play alto saxophone and the Native American style wood flute. On a lark I just ordered a student trumpet and how-to-play book from Woodwind & Brasswind. Over the years I always wondered if I could get a note out of a trumpet today. Was it like riding a bike. In 6 to 10 days, I'll be able to answer that question. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions for the collective wisdom of this group.

Well, when I started on trumpet two years ago, it was as a beginner. So, having played one as a a kid, you're one up on me already.

Just don't ask him about mouthpieces. I wouldn't want to scare him away.

Étude ETR 100. I still remember mouthpieces from grade school and have no fear. I play the saxophone and mouthpieces are scary.

But, we're all very certain that what we say is completely correct!

I gave up playing for 12 years in the 50s/60s and came back in 2016, 51 years after I quit. I was 79, so age made some differences, but I had a solid foundation in learning from a great pro teacher back when I started and I just never forgot those things. In my first month back, C on the staff was a challenge, but 6 months later I was playing an E over high C above the staff and had joined a Horizons band playing first trumpet.

So you may surprise yourself. Good luck, WildWilly.

My horn arrived today and I'm pleased with the sounds coming out. Got a how-to play DVD and CD and my notes dang near match the CD. I think I'm going to look for a teacher to speed up the learning process. So far, so good. As a side note, after playing the saxophone for years, the trumpet feels light as a feather.

3rd day back on the horse and I actually recognize a few notes. Tough part is embouchure. Play the sax and it's much different. It's starting to come back to me. Played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I'm sure a few people would recognize it.

Thanks for that, Ed. Harry was, still is and always will be my favorite trumpet player. His, and bands like his were all from my era and, musically speaking, I often wish those days were back again.

Another thank you to Ed for an inspiring YouTube look at greatness. A one month update on my journey back: I found a great teacher and we're doing weekly lessons via FaceTime. Whoda thunk? First lesson was a little awkward but it now feels natural. Found a can't-resist deal on a new Cannonball 727-B so I'm now a 2 trumpet owner. That will soon change as I have a Gretsch Pathfinder on the way. My first instrument, in 1955, was a Pathfinder and I bought it for sentimental value. Plan to display it in my music room. Scored it on FleaBay for $80.00, including shipping. That's the last trumpet I'm going to buy . . . But I digress. The low notes are a breeze and the hight notes are a challenge. Can hit high C and working on holding it. My teacher is a tremendous help and I look forward to mastering Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Hey, WildWilly, did you mean you can hit middle C ( 3rd space on the staff ) ?
Because high C is actually two lines above the staff.

Once you can play a true high C you will be well on your way. In my come back I believe it was two or three months before I could play a high C comfortably. These days different exercises that include high C above the staff are part of my daily routine.

Sounds like you are well on your way. All the best.
George
