Yo Jim!! That's a fine mute. I had it, but sold it. I kept the Wallace. Man, I think they need to endorse me after this thread is done. _________________ My go-to Trumpet and Flugel: Thane.

I know someone who bought one about a month or so ago from a listing on Reverb. It is a listing from a music store and they still have them according to the listing. Just search for Wallace practice mute when you get to Reverb. |
Thanks or the source and ideas. Instead of going to Wallace, I ordered the mute from another source. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I have used a mutec practice mute that looks like a harmon mute for years with good results. Feels more open than any other practice mute I own and is more in tune to boot. _________________ Bach 37 |

I'm also having a good experience with 'the silencer' – it actually makes the harmon mute speak better, especially in the lower register. _________________ Bach Strad LR 180-43S ML #315618

What about Pampet practice mute? (~$17)
I have one and it is quite usable until high C, with exception to very flat E w open valve. Great quiet sound and not so stuffy.
I tried Wallace but its intonation is typical of Hamon mute, so not sure it's your thing.
Bremmer Shhh has good intonation, but not so pleasing sound. I put it away once I get the Pampet. _________________ Oink, oink.

I did a quick check of a few mutes using Decibel X on my iPhone from about a 3' distance. I played Clarke technical study #2 around mezzo piano and then an arpeggio from low C to high C at around forte:
Unmuted: 85 dB Clarke/98 dB arpeggio
H&B cup mute: 84/98
Charlie Davis "Harmon" mute without stem: 74/84
Wallace practice mute: 68/78
Bremner sshh mute: 64/76
Trumcor Super Stealth mute: 69/73
Best Brass practice mute: 58/69
The Best Brass mute was quietest and also had the most resistance. I was surprised that the cup mute had almost no impact on the volume as it "felt" quieter than unmuted trumpet to me.
I'm sure that repeated testing under more controlled conditions would show some variation in the above, but this may at least offer some basis for making a decision. |

Fascinating about the dB's especially the cup mute volume. Will have to try this and see what happens.
The Bremner has less resistance and a better scale than my old Manny Klien. So has worked for me.
I am not sure tone quality is as important to me as a natural feel... |

Dillon sells a knock-off of the Best Brass practice mute. Luckily, I don't need a practice mute at home, but would use the Dillon when I needed to warm-up at the gig (remember those?!) when coming straight from work.
There's another device called the Trumpet Silencer, which fits into the stem section of a harmon mute. This didn't work for me - too much back pressure and didn't seem to really soften the sound - but it may for someone else.
