So, I just bought three (3) flugelhorns. I'm trying them and will return the other two. One of them is a Wisemann $300, which is not in the running. It sounds and feels far less smooth and solid as the Blessing and CarolBrass.

As for the the Blessing (BFH-1541RTS) and CarolBrass (CFL-6200-GSS - Bb- BG). Anyone with opinions on the quality or any other opinions of these two horns would be greatly appreciated.

Best,

dc

Carol Brass horns are generally consistent and well made.

The only Blessing flugelhorn I tried was not playable due to stuck-open Amado key.

Not gonna vote because it's so personal. Try them, with different mouthpieces if you can, record yourself and listen back. Pick the one that feels right.

Good luck!

Thie BFH-1541RT is newest model Blessing flugelhorn, it’s the result of the efforts by Phil Bauchman, and it’s a fine player. We’ve sold several of this model, one to a member of Berklee School of Music faculty, he totally digs how it sounds and plays. This model has lever water keys btw.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had any experience yet with Carol Flugelhorns to have an opinion of them. If the trumpets are any indication they’re very well made.

I hope this is helpful.

I have not tried the new Blessing.

I tried several Carols. I settled on/bought the 9990 (red brass), I like it a lot, warm, but I liked the gold brass one too.

+1 to trying different mouthpieces. The pack-in on the Carol is pretty lousy, I don’t know why they bother. Basically a poor take on a Bach3.

Thanks for the help and advice. I noticed that you sell mouth pieces and, some of the other posts recommend using a different mouthpiece than the one that comes with the CarolBrass. I'm not too far from Acton. Are you open to
discussing and recommending a specific mouthpiece?

Thanks,

Thanks for the response to my post and suggestion about the mouthpiece. It seems tough to figure out what would be a good one for me. I'm about a year months into re-building an embouchure that has been dormant for about 20 years. (I was fairly dedicated to my trumpet and cornet for 15 years before.)

I'm hearing that a deep mouthpiece will provide a better sound with lower notes as well as help to create a lower "smoky" sound. What are your thoughts on flat vs. rounded rims? Size of rim/diameter of cup?

What would you recommend?

I play my Carol with the stock mouthpiece. I tried a couple others which sounded a bit better tone-wise but were too flat in the high register. Curry 5FL for example. It is a personal thing, I use Monette-style backbores on trumpet so am used to wider octaves.

I have not tried any Blessings but have been very happy with my Carol.

I use Wick mouthpieces on everything (Trumpet, Fluegel, Tenor Horn, Euph).
Seems a bit lazy but I'm happy with them.

I have tried a fairly eclectic range of mouthpieces: Jupiter, ACB Fab 5, Curry 5DFL, and the Manchester, which is apparently a Carol 3. I actually like the Carol mouthpieces. I found their flugelhorn to be a nice deep sound with a wide, comfortable rim. I liked the sound on the Curry the best but also found it a bit wonky. I have not tried the Bach and Yamaha ones yet. It does seem like matching mouthpiece and flugelhorn is a known issue, so I'd see how the sound is with the stock mouthpieces and/or your favorite mouthpiece, since it may be more challenging than you'd think to upgrade the mouthpiece.

After many many years with several vintage Couesnon, I have preferred the Carol Brass, witch is now my favorite flugelhorn.
I use two mouthpieces with it, a Monette Prana and a AR Resonance, both equally well suited to this awesome horn.

Please share your experience on how both horns plays.
