Got my first instrument in 1955, a Gretsch Pathfinder trumpet. It was cobbled together with solder and baling wire and I loved it. I just purchased another Pathfinder for sentimental reasons only. Plan to display it in my music room. What and when was your first horn?

On a side note, I've searched high and low for a serial number list for Gretsch. Anybody know of a source?

My grandfather's no-name, Austrian cornet in 1954. Really didn't play it for another two years, though.

I got a brand new King Cleveland cornet when I started band in 6th grade, 1963. That thing was handed down through my two younger brothers, and my youngest brother still has it. I played it the last time I visited him, and it was just as bad as I remembered. It’s a miracle I stuck with playing...

@1962, a Bb/C student Couesnon that I still have! Sentimental horn but cannot compete with my Xeno 8335 RGS or my Weimann rotary...So it sleeps quietly.

King Cleveland Superior. It was a rental for 4th through 8th grade. I guess my mom figured I’d stick wit it and then bought it. Probably the most expensive used student trumpet ever lol.

Mendini, a year and a half ago. Yup, it had problems, but I fixed them and it worked really well after that. I got a new horn a month later and put that one aside, came back to it after a few months when I could more or less play, and it really wasn't that bad and played pretty well. Gave it away to a school program, feeling no guilt.

A used "rent to own" Olds Ambassador. played well and built like a tank. Great student horn from the 60's. I still have it. jw

I have two Mendini trumpets. A pocket and standard. The pocket is of better quality but I’m quite happy with both. Had the standard trumpet for going on 8 years now. I’ve got a top of the line Cecilio(the parent company) and it is quite nice. It’s a Jinbao horn though

Olds Ambassador, 1966. I had that horn until last year - kept it in my office to play long tones at lunch time until I came in one day to find it gone.

A rental I do not recall the name of. Not a Bundy.

Played it in 4th grade and half of fifth at which point the folks sprang for a Bach Mercedes (this was early 1969, so early Elkhart?). Played through sophomore year of HS. Sold the horn in my mid-20s. Not a horn about which I say "Geez, I wish I still had that."

Just a standard Bach 37 that my Dad and my trumpet teacher Dave Detwiler hooked me up with.

Another rent to own Olds Ambassador. I remember turning in the old beat-up one in the orange case for a nice shiny new one in a larger brown case after fulfilling the rental in a year or so (1966, I believe). I still have it. Original case, even have the mouthpiece that came with it. The only thing that is gone is the lyre, which broke somewhere along the way. Still plays just fine. Only repair is replacing worn out valve springs. Not so shiny any more.

1974. A Conn Director trombone (no sexy Coprion bell). I was in fifth grade and my parents bought it on a rent-to-own plan. I believe the final purchase price was $240 ($20 rental, $220 to buy). This represented a major investment for my parents, and I thank them for setting me on a musical path.

That said, I sold it in 1986 or '87 to a music-ed major who needed a trombone to practice on, for $50. No regrets. I still play trombone when called upon, but I have no interest in reacquiring a mid-'70s Director trombone... not even for old time's sake.

A rent-to-own 1969 Olds Ambassador Trumpet. That horn is long gone, so for sentimental reasons, I got a 1957 Olds Ambassador Trumpet a few years back. I also eventually acquired a 1957 Olds Ambassador Cornet, and most recently got a 1969 Olds L-12 Flugelhorn.

Yamaha 2320, Fall 1995. Still play it every day as my demo horn for my middle school students.

My parents bought me a brand new King Cleveland Superior cornet when I started band in 5th grade. I bought another one a couple of years ago on impulse and for old times' sake. It turned out to be a dog--I did a valve alignment and it played better, and I sold it for no profit.
