I think Art Farmer is one of the best jazz musicians who you don’t hear about as often. Otto Sauter is a classical artist who you rarely hear about, also excellent.

Erik Truffaz he has a number of albums out some jazz, some experimental, all excellent (in my humble opinion).

Jon Hassell one of the founder's of ambient electronic music and a true visionary on the trumpet. His processed trumpet sound (trumpet run through an Eventide Harmonizer) is very cool.

Ibrahim Maalouf probably well known to many on this list but not mentioned enough, his quarter tone trumpet playing is excellent.

Hassell is one of my favorite composers and players. He has a revolutionary way of playing the trumpet based on years of studying classical Indian breathing and playing techniques. He's also a master of electronics.
I recommend all of his work, but here are a few milestones:
- Fourth World Possible Musics
- Dressing for Pleasure
- Power Spot
- with Farafina: Flash of the Spririt
- Fascinoma

This stuff is not jazz, but it's really creative and interesting (at least to me)....

One of my favorite “unsung heroes” is Tommy Turrentine (brother of Stanley).

@ Trent. What orchestra was that?

It's the Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos. Matosinhos is a coastal city in northern Portugal. Here's their website: https://www.ojm.pt/en/eventos-1590159769423/biography/

Hi. Trying to expand my library of good trumpet players. Does anyone have any lesser known players that are phenomenal, or that you enjoy listening to? (this is for any genre)

Thanks!

Listen to this section: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKq4sjSiNZc
It´s from Swing is King by Ted Heath; maybe Bert Ezzard, Derek Watkins?

And here is the same tune but with Don Lusher´s band. Same arrangement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMtcTQlntzQ

They sure know how to play!

Not knowing who's "lesser known" to you -

Don Ellis

Ira Sullivan - multi-instrumentalist jazzer

Don Goldie - played an older style but super tasty licks, warm, golden tone.

Nick Russo - he played lead with Jackie Gleason's orchestra at one point, played some of the Vegas Hotels - somewhere I've got a copy of an old print ad for the Martin Committee where he's one of the featured artists. Played at Disney World with his group Nick Russo And Gabriel's Brass for years. He put out some albums, here's a cut from one.

Danny Stiles - Lead trumpet for Merv Griffin, played with the Bill Watrous band among others.

Marvin Stamm - superb jazzer. He played the flugel solo on Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey".

Frank Brown - phenomenal player but you'll have to hunt to find his work.

Bill Prince - player and music educator trumpet is one of the axes he's superb on.

James Morrison - Australian multi-instrumentalist, strongest on 'bone and trumpet.

Carole Reinhart - lady classical player - super sound. She's an American but her career was primarily in Europe. She once appeared on To Tell The Truth back in the 60's.

Jonah Jones - big full sound, good swinging feel. He was on the Cab Calloway band along with Dizzy Gillespie.

Great list. i saw Don Ellis live about 6 months before he died. He played only superbone with a college band. Played his ass off.
I saw Nick Russo several times at Disney World as I grew up in Florida. I think he was also the lead player in Jackie Gleason's band on the Jackie Gleason show from Miami Beach. Nick could flat out blow man! And Gabriel's brass alsways had some good young players.
Danny Stiles was a great lead player. Was one of the top cats in NYC and played lead on Bill Warous' Manhattan Wildlife Refuge big band and I think on the early Thad Jones/Mel Lewis band.

Though it's not really 'a lesser known' I stumbled upon a re-issue of an album by the Canadian bass player Neil Swainson with a Canadian rhythm section and Joe Henderson on tenor and Woody Shaw on flügel (he is one of my favourit players).
It seems to be one of the last recordings of Shaw (1988) and it is great!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eyyYUEyW5Kc&ab_channel=JazzLovers

On Randy Cole's youtube channel you can find an interview with Swainson about the re-issue.
