Nice article.
Just helped to buy a new Lukas horn; up there in cost with Lewis. Ouch, compared to trumpet prices, but even a custom horn doesn’t come close to many good, orchestral string instruments.

Those CSO folks can afford them and unlike trumpeters, they don't need 20 different instruments. Orchestra trumpeters and other pros will spend easily that much and more on the instruments they need.
I backed up Jim Smelser, the CSO 2nd horn, when he played a concerto with the band I was in and his sound was just magnificent. Of course, so was his playing.
