Nice axe. I got an early 50's 80A fixed up this summer. I now feel inspired to share before/after pics... |

Very nice finish, really makes it stand out. It was a fun horn to work on, don't see many like it. _________________ "Strive for tone." -John Coppola

I need to compliment the owner and repair techs that remade this cornet. It's a part of brass history. When you can pick that up again and play it as was intended from its manufacture you are really enjoying something special. _________________ "There are two sides to a trumpeter's personality,

We are the custodians of these wonderful instruments and making music with them ceases to be an activity and becomes a joy.
I too have breathed life back into instruments and I have been repaid many times over the cost of it.
These instruments are magic flutes and the world pauses briefly when they sound.
And in those moments while in our hands they sound we earn our place in this world and we justify the space we take up on this rock.
You have my respect and Holton my admiration. _________________ Conn 80a Cornet

I’ve continued to research the Holton Collegiate 502 and have discovered that this particular horn was one of the first to bear the Collegiate name and was in fact based on an earlier model called the Ideal.
The 502 was made in Bb/A only in 1938 and 1939 and, according to the badge, was built in Elkhorn. Also, the build quality seems more professional than student level. _________________ Jim Hatfield

That history makes this horn special in its own right.
Most horns are special but few are special in their own right.
When you find one of these it is remarkable and worth preserving.
I have one such, forgive me for describing it
Back in 1917 LaFleur made some medium quality instruments and the company was swallowed up by Boosey and co
The LaFleur instruments were relegated to being low grade Boosey instruments.
Much later during WW2 Selmer ran out of instruments to sell because they had sourced their instruments from europe which was then in the hands of Nazi Germany.
Suddenly Selmer started selling the LaFleur instruments of their major competitor Boosey and co, badged as their own products. This is highly unusual.
I have one such, a trumpet stenciled as Selmer STUDENT and serialed 1944.
I believe that this must have been the only way that Selmer could stay afloat during wartime by forming an agreement with Boosey to use some old stock and lower quality Boosey instruments and is therefore of historic interest.
We both hold historic and significant instruments so we must treasure them and look after them. _________________ Conn 80a Cornet

Looks great! Being a Holton fan I’m really digging it. How do those play? Can you compare to anything? _________________ a few different ones |
