The other trumpet player in my brass quintet recently acquired an Olds "Clark Terry" flugelhorn. It sounds and plays beautifully. Does anyone else play this particular flugelhorn? Do your impressions mirror my own?

I had BAC make a custom 3+1 flugel for me a couple of years ago, and they had acquired an Olds flugel bell mandrel that was used to make at least one Clark Terry flugel back in the day. It has a very long bell flare segment (crook to end). The sound is always "present" and "bold," but can be "masked" somewhat by deeper-cupped mouthpieces.

The Olds CT flugel is a rare bird. I think there are only around 400 of them in existence. Perhaps Trent Austin will chime in and share a little bit about his CT flugel.

I used to have one of those. GREAT horn. had to sell it to pay the rent, and it's one of 3 horns I wish I still had.

I happen to have several old stock Olds bells, two for flugelhorn. Without engraving I can only speculate one is a standard model and the other a Clark Terry model. The CT flair is quite large, the bow is square, very similar to an old Paris Selmer. I would otherwise use one or the other for a build of my own flugelhorn if only I could find an appropriate branch taper. If anyone has interest in the CT bell, send me a PM to discuss possible applications. Thanks.

In his recent video on long cornets, Trent Austin mentioned he has a Clark Terry flugelhorn that he is willing to sell...

for five million dollars.

For sure, he was being sarcastic. Just driving home the point of how some horns have sentimental meaning and are not for sale.

Not being sarcastic but I wouldn't sell it although $5M might change my mind.

I got this via CT (long story) and it's the only horn I truly cherish.

I’d love to hear the whole story. Clark Terry is one of my main inspirations and a major part of why I chose to play trumpet.

It's not a Clark Terry, but anyone in the central Georgia area might want to take a look at this estatesales.net listing; it shows what certainly appears to be an Olds flügelhorn (listed as a trumpet, the finger buttons are missing in the photo):
