My dad recently picked up my old cornet, after 20 something years of never touching one. He's not doing badly, he remembers fingerings and such. His main problem seems to be having a weak embouchure. Anybody have any tips or good exercises to help him build up?
Thanks,
Asher |

Same things we started with years and years ago: long tones, Arban's, Herring etudes... I actually picked up a "Level 2" band student book for the trumpet and worked through it over and over until I could play each exercise competently (and that took some time!)
Best wishes to your Dad... tell him he needs to join in the discussion here! _________________ Kanstul F Besson International 800 Bb

Long tones, long tones, long tones. For getting the muscle memory back there is nothing better. Try the Cat Anderson ppp middle G '20 minute' exercise. This sounds so easy, right? I've been working on it daily for 3 weeks and 10 minutes is as far as I am up to, but after a 15 minute rest, when I go back to Arban's I can tell a ton of improvement in my breath control and tone. |

Let me add what I do for a practice routine.
I do the BE exercises. One minute playing one minute rest. For a total of 15 Minutes Playing AND Resting.
I then do the Cat Anderson Twenty Minute G in 5 Minute Intervals. 5 Minutes Playing 5 Resting until I have PLAYED for 20 Minutes. When you look at my actual playing time it isn't much but with the Cat Anderson 20 Minute G as soft as a whisper I can play 3 HOUR Gigs, with just Guitar, Keyboard and Me(Trumpet). _________________ Student of the Trumpet!

One of the best things he can do is rest for for a full ten seconds every eight bars. _________________ Jim Hatfield

OK, I give. This will show one of my many areas of ignorance, but ... what's the "Cat Anderson Twenty Minute G"?
