A recent thread about Olds got me to thinking - are/were there any known jazz players who played Olds trumpets? And what models? I'm just curious. Thanks.

I think Carl Saunders plays an Olds flugelhorn. Other than that, I am not sure.

Jonah Jones supposedly performed on Olds trumpets mid-century. I think he played multiple Olds models over about 25 years, but the only one I see referenced is a Super. He later switched to King.

The Smithsonian has a mangled Ambassador that was owned by Andrew Blakeney โ€“ but I really doubt he would have performed on an Ambassador. There are a number of pictures where he appears to be playing a trumpet that resembles a Selmer or other French make, and I found a picture late in life with a Strad, but no Ambassador.

Mendez, of course, was the biggest name linked to Olds, but I imagine that the handful of Jazz classics in his tour repertoire is not what was meant by the question.

The only person I currently know making a living performing in the genre on real FE Olds instruments, though cornet, is Nick DeCarlis (yes, that 80+ year old Olds Standard in the home page photo has a hammered bell).

There is Rob Zinn, who I guess you could say is, among other things, a jazz trumpeter. He endorses Phaeton, which is another brand of the importer that now owns the Olds name, and Phaeton is declared to be a division of Olds.

In the famous player-horn site you can find some information.
Some players I don't know but of the more well known ones I mention: Uan Rasey, Rec., Rafael Mendez, Mendez, Rec., Booker Little, Rec., Louis Prima, Amb. Rec., Red Nichols, Super, Blue Mitchell, Super, Jonah Jones, Super, Mike Vax, Rec., and some more like Lee collins, Tony Fisher, Jon Erik Kellso, and some who played incidentally an Olds cornet or trumpet: Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Rex Stewart, Bobby Hackett, Wild Bill Davison, Don Cherry.

Famous improvisers who used Olds would be:

Clark Terry (Olds CT signature trumpet and flugel)

Booker Little (Recording)

Carmell Jones (Recording)

Ryan Kisor (pre-WWII Super trumpet and cornet, Super Recording, Mendez)

Kenny Rampton has on Olds Mendez but I don't think he plays it with Jazz At Lincoln Center

I think Roy Hargrove played an Ambassador for a brief period

Lee Morgan played an Ambassador cornet on some recordings and live performances. I think he used an ambassador trumpet on occasion as well.

I'm sure there are more, but this is all I can remember at the moment.

The Swedish jazz trumpeter Karl Olandersson (great player, check him out!) plays an Olds Recording.

Do these Recordings and Supers lean towards bright, MOR or darkish sounds? And how does their physical weight compare to other standard horns? Thanks.

I think they're a touch heavier, especially the Recording model with all the nickel and Rey-O-Loy (bronze) on it. I think the Super-Recording is a little lighter. The early supers are about the same weight as a NY Bach, maybe even lighter.

The Olds Recording I play is a little heavier and has a darker tone too, though it can really brighten up if you push it. Recordings are also pretty sensitive to the mouthpiece used to play it.

I had a โ€˜56 Recording (HAD, youโ€™re welcome Trent!๐Ÿ˜‰), with a GR Carl Fischer mpce it worked very well with a 12 piece funk band. In other words, plenty bright enough for that genre. I suspect it would be very adaptable to most any genre, overall weight was probably average to slightly heavier than whatever average is, certainly very well built.

(Since I mentioned Trent Austin, he made me a great deal on my current favorite, an Adams A4LT, Austin Custom Brass is an excellent company).

I have a Super with the brass tone ring from the 1940's. It is kinda light and pretty bright.

I have a Super fro the 1970's. It is a bit heavier than the older one but to me feels like a pretty normal weight for trumpet. It is not super bright, but will light up when needed. It works well in any situation. I can play in concert band, big band, and rock band with it.

I have a Recording from the 1960's. It is a pretty dark playing instrument. Very much like my Eclipse MR. Great for legit and small groups, but too much work to play lead on.

My favorite horn is my Super Recording. It plays very much like my Super from the 1970s. It is a great horn that works in any situation. The thing that makes it special is that it is very forgiving. For some reason that I can't explain I rarely crack a note with it. The slots are just very sure footed.

I'd like to get my hands on a P-13 Clark Terry Custom Crafted.

Mike, is the Olds your go-to horn or some other brand?
