I was looking at getting one of these and was wondering these three questions:
1. What is really the difference between the 16.02 and the 16.22 and which would be better to go with? I currently play on a 16C4 (1.5C) and as such was thinking the 16.22. However, I have not gotten to try one of these yet and was wondering if the 16.22 would be the right choice to keep it similar to my current mouthpiece or if I should look into the 16.02 as well?
2. How is it as an overall mouthpiece? I’ve read nothing but good reviews, but I am looking for some more testimonials as to how the mouthpiece really is as well as how it affects your other aspects of playing. I don’t want a piece that will accidentally cause backwards progress in my playing.
3. Is it a good value? _________________ Schilke B1 Bb

I tried a Miyashiro mouthpiece once and struggled to get a second-line G out of it. It was so shallow as to be nigh unusable for me, but then again my main mouthpiece on both trumpet and cornet is a Monette B11, which translates to a deep 1B in Bachspeak. Your mileage may vary. _________________ 1936 King Liberty No. 2

I still have the Marcinkiewicz EM piece, although I don't use it anymore. Not
having tried either Yamaha version, I'll give you my experiences with it and
answer your questions anyway...
1. You may find that choosing a piece just based on measurements can be
unsuccessful for a few reasons. Although the specs say that the E18 has a 16.4
inside diameter it felt much smaller to me. And yes, the cup is quite shallow!
The backbore was also much tighter than I was used to at that time so that
took some adjusting.
2. At least for me, it could not be used in overall usage...much more effective
as a commercial tool. I used it a few times on some outdoor parade gigs which
worked well. At least until the rim shape became uncomfortable on longer jobs
(which also ties into #1).
3. At $50 I would say it couldn't hurt to try, and who knows? You might really like
it, and if not you could resell it at not much of a loss. |
