A lot has changed over the past several years and I haven't kept up with who's still in business and building custom trumpets. I know Kanstul went out of business and Paul Jeninga passed away sometime ago. Schilke and Blackburn are still making fine trumpets. Their instruments are not totally custom builds though.

Who do symphonic trumpet players go to when they need a custom trumpet built from the ground up?

Speaking symphonic only, I know of these:

https://www.ricco-kuehn.de/

https://www.martin-schmidt-potsdam.de/

https://www.krinner-instrumentenbau.de/

http://www.hm-trompeten.de/me/me.htm

https://thein-blechblasinstrumente.de/

But there should be more

Not sure if either meets the definition of being "totally custom," but Ken Larson and Fred Powell come to mind. Both make fine horns.

Why not, I’ll throw my hat in the ring.

We’ve built one off trumpets from orchestral to our commercial Studio Classic https://www.google.com/amp/s/osmun.com/amp/osmun-studio-classic-bb-trumpet/
And of course, our double shepherds crook https://www.google.com/amp/s/osmun.com/amp/osmun-corumpet/

In addition to precision valve alignment, whenever possible to do fine tuning in person, customers can select their choice of leadpipe and tuning slide, critical placement of braces, finger hook, rings or saddles, even water key style or none at all. Choice from an array of finishes too.

I would suggest not ever ordering a one off custom horn. Why? Simply because you might not like it, and then either be stuck with it, or have to have the maker keep modifying it, which he would do up to a point. If you like a model that a small shop makes, get that one. Play it for a while, and then modify it if it is necessary. If you buy a stock model, you should be able to play it for a couple of weeks, and then return it if you don't like it. If you get a one off model, which will likely be a variant of a stock model, you might be up schitt's creek if you don't like it. You might think you know what you would like, but it might not turn out that way.

I gotta ask: what is the benefit of having no water keys? And on a completely unrelated note, did Osmun used to be in Belmont, Massachusetts?

No water key is a feature preferred by none other than John Faddis. See link

https://www.schilkemusic.com/bb-trumpets/hd-series/s43hdl-f/

And yes, Osmun was in Belmont, Massachusetts. On Common Street near the corner of Trapelo Road, moving to Arlington Heights in 1996.

Seems no water keys would force one to be very diligent in the regular cleaning and maintenance of their horn, anyways.

Ah, it was Osmun! I bought my Bach 180 72 bell in Belmont in the mid 90s. Thanks for connecting that thread. I may have to get it blueprinted one of these days
