About the trumpet work....
Betsy Jolas: Onze Lieder

Betsy Jolas (b. 1926) was born in France to an American family. She spent part of his growing years in the United States, where she studied music at Bennington College. In 1946, she returned to France and studied at the Paris Conservatory, e.g. Led by Darius Milhaud and Olivier Messiaen. She later taught herself in the same class. She has also taught in the United States, including Yale, Harvard, and Tanglewood.

Jolas has created a significant international career as a composer and has collaborated with conductor Simon Rattle, flutist Pierre-Yves Artaud, cellist Anssi Karttunen, trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has been awarded the Koussevitzky Prize and the International Maurice Ravel Prize. She is commander of the French Order of Arts and Literature and knight of the French Legion of Honor.

The composer's extensive production includes operas, orchestral pieces, chamber music, and solo and choral works. Newer productions are represented, for example, by string quartets 7 (2018) and 8 (2019) and the orchestral work Letters from Bachville (2019) commissioned by the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Boston Symphony Orchestra.

In an interview with Maria Kalliopää in 2016, Jolas said: “My roots are in the whole history of music, not just in the music of my own time. It is a privilege that I can have a relationship with all the great music of the past. ” In another context, she has mentioned that she was inspired by works by Monteverd, Debussy and Schumann, for example. Although her expression is modernist, it finds a strong reliance on basic melodic and vocal values.

Onze Lieder (Eleven Songs) is a work for trumpet and chamber orchestra composed in 1977 in Paris. The trumpet player in the premiere was Pierre Thibaud. The ensemble Intercontemporain was led by Michel Tabachnik. Despite the title, the work is one-piece. The “songs” performed by the trumpet are sometimes dreamy in tone, sometimes biting.
