Can a standard (non-Bach) flugel mouthpiece be used for a cornet? Are there gap issues? Downsides?
Thanks! _________________ Bach 239 C

Not really no..
It won't insert properly and you get the effects of a very poor "gap" (even if it's a gapless receiver).
I do know a chap that plays a Wick flugel piece on third cornet, but that has the shank turned down. |

If you take the flugelhorn mouthpiece top and make it threaded onto a Warburton cornet backbore / shank, it might work. |

I had Mark Curry make me one. It was a deep flugel mouthpiece with a vintage Conn cornet shank. Sound was just okay but the intonation was not good. _________________ Richard

The earlier Olds cornets had a flugel-sized receiver if I'm not mistaken. The basic geometry of the mouthpieces is relatively similar (the throat size is larger I think?), so I reckon you could make it work...as long as it fits the receiver. |

Bach flugelhorn mouthpieces fit them better. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

I had a Martin Custom Flugelhorn, the one that looks (and plays) more like a Bb mellophone (IMHO) and its receiver was strictly a cornet receiver. I had a Martin #1 cornet piece that was pretty close to a flug piece, I guess really a deep funnel shape, that worked on it, and I also had a few REALLY DEEP Denis Wick cornet mouthpieces for British Brass Band playing, cornet shank, that really made it sound like a flugelhorn. I am looking at one now, a Wick 2 (no letter). It does have the short British cornet shank, but I have played it in my Bach 184 and Olds British Brass Band version of the Ambassador. Very dark. Also, try the Yamaha short shank cornet mouthpieces. i use the 16E occasionally. Very flugelhorn-ish. You can get those in smaller rim sizes, all the way down to a 6E. The traditional British cornet pieces do have a falrly large orifice. My Endsley mouthpiece gauge largest size is a number 14 drill, and it is VERY loose in the Wick mouthpiece. The large orifice, IMHO, may make problems in intonation, on some horns. _________________ huntman10
