I recently made a change from a Wedge to a similar size ACB3CS mouthpiece.
As much as I love the Wedge, my 84 year old chops are cranky if placement of the mp isn't as it should be. The transition to the ACB3CS was simple and painless and I no longer need to worry about lining up the dot.
I can't say enough about the ACB3CS. It is super comfortable and more efficient than any mp I have played...and there have been many.
What I don't understand is why there isn't more talk about Trent Austin's mouthpieces from users at this forum. _________________ GeorgeB

Congrats on your new mouthpiece! Nice to read that you find it to your liking.

I’m a fan of Trent’s videos and he comes across as a sincere and knowledgable trumpeter. I also like when he shows what his various mouthpieces can do to the sound of a trumpet and was particularly interested in ACB’s flugel-like mouthpieces. However, being unable to try his mouthpieces (yet) means I have little to say about them. |

Trent, Josh and the whole ACB crew are nothing short of awesome. I started with an ACB FAB 5 when they first came out. I liked it, but wanted something a bit shallower and they recommended the 3DS (which I ordered in the Modern Blank), which was just what I'd hoped for. I currently have a 3DS top ordered so I can use it with the different backbores I have. I also have a 3CS top that I use from time to time with the ACB S and Warburton Series 80-8 heavy backbores, and a 3CS Flugelhorn mouthpiece. All have a very comfortable rim. _________________ Best Regards,

I have several of Trent’s TA-1 pieces which have a V cup and a 6-ish ID. I find them to be very comfortable and work well for big band style playing. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I too am a huge fan of Trent's ACB 3CS series. I also have a 3DS and 3ES that I also love. These are now pretty much all that I use.
I recently, due to allergies, had to move to acrylic tops - Trent's acrylic pieces are also excellent and sound on the bell side almost identical to the metal ones.
Josh is fantastic to deal with. I just has a 3CS-V made which is currently on its way to me - excited to receive it soon to give that slightly darker sound.

Hi, Jim, I was thinking of trying the TA-1 but I wondered about the V cup making my tone sound like a cornet. I like as rich warm sound to my tone. How do you like the tone you get with your TA-1 ?

Hi, Heather. Nice to hear your comments on the ACB3CS. It is a fantastic mp. And I agree, Josh is great.
What part of Nova Scotia do you live ? I've played for Horizons and now play with Pictou County Brass and Reed in New Glasgow.

Hey George - I play for Horizons in Truro. I actually work in New Glasgow though.
I came out for a couple of sessions a few years ago with Pictou County Brass and Reed in New Glasgow but found that I could not accommodate with my schedule - we may have met there briefly.
I sent you a PM if you ever want to try some of the other sizes.

George, I find my tone with the TA-1 for me is like baby bear’s porridge, not too bright, not too dark - just right. But I’m also hard of hearing so my opinion is probably suspect. _________________ Jim Hatfield

George - there is s TA-1 posted on marketplace for $50. Might be a cheap way to try one out.
Jim - I am having a hard time visualizing what a baby bears porridge would sound like but would guess mellow and smooth.

I have a TA2 and one of his TF hybrid mouthpieces. They are both great, particularly the TF. _________________ 1932 King Silvertone cornet

I have a 10CV and an FX Hybrid from him (all great pieces). I’ve owned the 3c, 3cs, MV3C, and I think a few others. They’re great, and the different blanks make it fun and also easy to find something similar to what you had before. |

Hi,
I play almost exclusively on a TA 1 and it is a solid trumpet mouthpiece, but has some versatility to it, if you want to fluffy things up it is easier than with other mouthpieces. I would say the cup is V - ish and not as deep a V as the hybrid ones.
I have another 3C from ACB but I prefer the TA 1.
What I like the most about the ACB is the concept, I got my TA 1 in the traditional blank, but the multiple blanks give you a lot of options. I am thinking of getting the TA1 in the modern or even the slug.
ACB has an ebay bargain bin where you could find a lot of the mouthpieces at around 70, which is a good way to try and see if things work.
regards. _________________ Joe S |

Count me in into the ACB mouthpiece fan club. FOR ME and my playing they are the best on Trumpet I personally ever had and played.
I tried many of his mouthpieces and I must have still close to a dozen. After trying many I always come back to the ACB MV 1.25C. For me it gives me the best balance/compromise between free blowing and efficiency, with a great full sound and ease of moving up and down the scale. _________________ B & H Sovereign 928

Based on this, Jim, I have ordered a TA-1 from Josh at ACB. He was pleased I am going to try it because it was one of the recommendations he first made to me when I considered switching away from the Wedge. I am going with the TRADITIONAL blank to start even though I like the look of the modern blank. I just don't think too much weight is a good thing right now, and Traditional is probably a safe middle of the road start.
What blank or blanks are you using, Jim ?

George, I have a couple of the standard blanks and one that Trent calls the Star Slug. For some reason, the slug doesn’t fit my horn receiver well.
I also have some standard TA1 tops - metal and acryllic - for use with different backbores. _________________ Jim Hatfield

I play a ACB Acrylic 1.5C with an O backbore. So comfortable rim, and I get a nice big sound on it. Exactly what I need for my line of work. _________________ http://www.hornkapelle.dk |

I'd just like to add my endorsement of the ACB MV 1.25C to those above. For classical/orchestral applications it is a nicely balanced and efficient mouthpiece with a rich and breadthy presence and projection of sound. It works great on both Bb and C trumpet... although I've just ordered another one with a 'OO' backbore to see whether it balances up with the resistence of the C just a little better for me. I hope it's not too open! If so, I'll whack it in the D/Eb tpt and see what happens. Thanks to Trent and Josh for producing such a great mp. |
