Purviance 5*3 is my favorite.

A close runner up would be the Bob Reeves 43C which is based on the Purviance 5*3 but slightly shallower with a bit more alpha angle at the top of the cup, and a slightly smaller backbore (the Purviance 5*3 has a #5 backbore; the 43C has a #26 backbore).

Honorable mentions would be my copy of Arturo Sandoval's favorite Mt Vernon 3C and my Bach 1X. And on the shallower end of the spectrum, I like my Reeves 43M.

Long answer to a short question...

1. Warburton 4 rim, various cups and backbones. For jazz/show music I gravitate to the 4S or 4M with a Q Backbore. 4MD/PT for classical. I'm really glad they came out with the PT I don't like the 8 and 9 and the 10 sounds great but is too open for me.
2. Wick 3B for cornet in brass band.
3. Pickett Brass 3BC/0 24 throat as an alternate classical piece.

i play a wild thing 3C-O. it's one of perhaps a dozen excellent pieces that satisfy the quest for a mt. vernon 3C.

I use a Monette B1-5M, C1-5M, etc. Resonance models are my everyday (non-Prana), but some version has been my everyday since the mid-2000s. Play a B1-5D (or a B1-1/1-5) for a decade before that, and B1-1 for 8 years before that (takes me back to 1988).

1.....Vintage deep V Heim with Bach 6 rim soldered on. Very deep, very dark.
2.....Bach 6C with cup bottom reamed to a V. Middle of the road tone.
3.....JetTone Merian SX. Nice tone down low, clear and quick speaking high.
4.....Reeves P8 with a Bach 6 rim soldered on. Like #3 but more endurance.
All these are thinwalled, shank reduced so no lead pipe gap, bent 15-20 deg.

comments welcome

Mt V Bach ML late 60s 72bell silver, repl. tuning slide toward but not exactly round from a Selmer Bundy

I have no right to comment in this thread. I've already changed mouthpieces twice since I first posted in it, LOL! But right now I am enjoying the Lotus 1L I just got! I have played 2 other Lotus pieces and the sound wasn't quite right. But this 1L, since it is so large, I feel I can control the tone I produce a lot more because I have so much lip inside the damn thing. I wonder how I will last on a long loud gig on it. We shall see.

I was recently playing the Austin Custom Brass 1.25CS outdoors with some friends on a jam session and got tired quickly and was playing very flat in the upper register, but that is my fault and not the mouthpiece. However, I would love to replicate the situation with the Lotus and see if I do better.

My favorite one is the one I'm playing now. That may change if you ask again.

I went from Bach 3C to Stork to Yamaha to Warburton to GR. Then to Chase Sanborn GR 66 MS.

Those in the signature. I also like my Curry 7TC for special situations requiring a flugel-ish sound and an AR Resonance 40ME/40S if the Lotus is a little too much.

I really want to try out Stork, Griego, and AR Resonance for the bass trumpet.

For a bright sound and/or playing in upper register:

- for trumpet, a custom Pickett with a 1 rim; also a Monette B2

- for cornet, a Schilke 14A4x or Bach 1C

For a warmer/darker/more soloist sound:

- for trumpet, a Monette B11 or an ACB TF 1.25

- for cornet, also a Monette B11 (but not the same B11 as above!) or a Yamaha David King

On a safari for the flugelhorn at the moment...

Reeves 41 Rims (originally # 1 designation) since very early 70s! Never seriously thought about trying anything else!

1S695
41S695
41C692 (Daily Driver)
41FE
41HF
41C2J
41sv Cornet Shank (Piccolo)
Really enjoying my new Piccolo mouthpiece!
Next order: Reeves 41B (undetermined bottom).

Edit: Ordered and received a Reeves 41B692 after a consultation with John Snell. Time well spent sorting out the need and the solution. These folks are extremely good at what they do and are an invaluable resource! Thanks John!

My favorite-sounding mouthpiece is my Curry 1 1/4C in the BC style blank. But it is too big for me, I cannot really handle playing it.

My favorite at the moment is a Bach 3C, made in 2020.

I have tried dozens of Bach 3Cs, and they are all a little bit different. Even when my local music shop ordered ten of them, so I assume they were made in the same "batch," they were all a little bit different. The one I have seems to fit me better than most.

OK, little update: I did practice quite a bit recently (work permitting, this is always an issue), so there have been slight changes.

Looks like AR Resonance is establishing itself as my homebase; has been ongoing for ca. 4 years now and these are my favorite pieces:

AR ME40/40XS both in nickel silver: commercial, lead (Bach)
AR MD40/40L Classical both in bronze: orchestra (Schmidt rotary)
AR ME40/40S: Franken C
AR MC40/40L: cornet
GR 65FL: flugel

Specialty pieces
Curry 7TC (for those few bars of flugel-ish sound)
Warburton 5D on an AR Resonance 40M/40L/40L Classical backbore (even darker and mellower than the Curry)
AR Resonance ME40 Buffalo on various AR backbores (for the cold days)

Overall I have mostly switched to AR because they allow for a lightness and precision of playing with a great sound and intonation that I have not found in other pieces. I’m especially fascinated by what I’d like to call fluidity of playing. For me, moving around from bottom to top has never been easier and these transitions are very smooth; no „breaks“ between notes on large jumps or weird intervals.

On the way I have discovered that Warburton tops work VERY well with AR backbores, but I have only touched a little bit upon THAT rabbithole so far 😀

Trumpet: MSLead40 cup/Lead40 backbore
Flugelhorn: MFLD42 cup/PS42L backbore
Cornet: M40 cup/40S backbore

All by AR Resonance. Switched a few years ago and haven’t regretted it since.

I did try a Denis Wick mouthpiece recently for my flugel, as it seemed to help with some intonation issues I have but sadly it didn’t work out.

For my everyday playing I love my Wedge 65MD and the 65MV. For band work it is the ACB TA1.
