In Junior high we started a dixieland band with the help of our band teacher.
back in 1968 for me that was 54 years ago. Eventually we won the state fair competition. We had costumes black and white shoes, straw hats, vests etc.
We had Tuba, banjo, drums, trumpet, trombone, piano, clarinet and saxophone. We were called the chowder house 8.

We basically played the songs no improvising.
Like I want a butter and egg man...
Anyone else try this dixieland stuff when you were young.

An old man now but i remember this song.

My high school featured a Dixieland combo as an offshoot of the jazz band. Two trumpets, two trombones, clarinet, tuba, banjo & drums. We learned three songs and played them ad nauseum for pep rallies, band concerts, and even at football games during slow 3rd quarters. The band dads built a wheeled platform for the drum set so we could haul it around the track and play for the visitors' side. I could have done without the hokey striped paper vests and styrofoam "straw" hats, but it did get me started listening to Armstrong and others from that era.

Oh yeah, I played Dixieland in HS. Really fun music! And while we're pulling the skeletons out of the closet, I was in a polka band, too. Lederhosen, the works! Not what most kids were doing at 16, 17, and 18 years old. But some of my best memories are of goofing off and making good music with my friends.

1965 through 1968 we were playing Tijuana Brass charts. Two trumpets, trombone, piano, trap set, what we called "miscellaneous percussion" (maracas, claves, tambourine, occasionally xylophone etc.), and some form of bass (we even used a Bass Clarinet when necessary). Some of the moms made us satin vests and sashes, and once our band came back from the Sun Bowl parade in El Paso and several of us brought back those ridiculously large Sombreros (those were fun, but not practical). Days before cultural appropriation, unless you consider that we grew up in a small rural Texas town, and all that was actually a part of our own history.

I still have the books (and a sombrero, but the sash is oddly much too small now!), in case it ever comes back up. Played lots of civic group meetings, local conventions, talent shows, elementary school assemblies, harvest festivals whenever we could wrangle an invite. It was the only thing that could get us out of Mrs. Shinn's American History class, which was a great incentive! We typically played 6 to 10 charts per appearance. I think the book had more than 40 different tunes, and we changed it up frequently.

When I think of Dixieland Music I think of Jim Cullum. When attending the TMEA conferences in San Antonio small groups of us would go over to Jim Cullum's "Landing" for some of the best live Dixieland around. Some great memories and a lot of great Dixieland music! That is a great example of counterpoint.

I always bought a few CD's every time I went, remember CD's?!! Now you're going to get me digging around to find and listen to some of that music.

In my younger playing days, '53 to '65 I played in lots of jam sessions but no Dixieland. I loved Dixieland but no one was into it where I lived.

I still love playing Dixieland. I started playing it in the early 1960's, my Dad had a Dixieland Band that I played in all through High School and beyond. Here is a sample of my Flip Oakes Jazz Party Dixieland Band that I still have. Hope you'll enjoy these. There's plenty to choose from.

In my high school years, playing Dixieland was old-fashioned and beneath my dignity. Now I'm comfprtably settled in.

Over the last few decades, I've played hundreds of Dixieland performances and also arranged and collected a good bit of material.

My band, the Dixie Dogs, is up and blowing again after a a gigless year due to do the pandemic.

Our first gig is a barbecue in June with other events to follow.

We play mostly out of the Real Dixieland book, spread the lead playing around, keep the solos short, and have a great time!
