|
|
Please share some up and coming jazz musicians that are going to be great. I'm looking for some fresh inspiration. Hopefully some players that I haven't heard. I am hip to Tony Glausi, Marquis Hill, Ambrose, Philip Dizack, etc... is there anyone truly great I haven't found yet? Maybe some players from outside of the US? |

Not trumpet, but check out Domi and JD Beck -- so young, and insanely talented. |

Charlie Porter. Great player and he has some terrific instructional trumpet vids on YouTube too! _________________ Comeback Trumpeter as of 12/20 (after 25 years off)

Kenny Warren released a new electronic solo album today. Definitely more on the experimental side, but he's a very interesting improviser and musician.
https://kennywarren.bandcamp.com/album/roll-me-down-the-mountaintops
Jonathan Saraga is a fantastic trumpet player and composer. He's got some small group records, but he also plays a great solo on this big band composition he released recently. (Disclosure - I am playing on this track)

Adam O'Farrill is a brilliant young improvisor here in Brooklyn. He's got several records with his group, Stranger Days.
https://adamofarrill.bandcamp.com/
David Adewumi recently won the Carmine Caruso Trumpet Competition, and was also featured on a small-group recording with the great Dave Douglas.

The Westerlies is a contemporary brass quartet comprised of trumpeters Chloe Rowlands and Riley Mulherkar, both fantastic players in their own right. They have an extensive catalog despite their youth.

Stuart Mack is another great younger player, definitely more in the straight-ahead post-bop vein. You'll be hearing a lot more from him I suspect.

French-Canadian Rachel Therrien is modern jazz player with a gorgeous sound, plays a lot of flugelhorn. She's got a pretty deep catalogue.
https://racheltherrien.bandcamp.com/album/vena
I'm not super familiar with her catalogue, but Linda Briceño seems like a monster player as well.
I almost don't want to say this part, but I feel I must, having seen some awfully distasteful judgements cast around this site previously. Some of these records are more avant garde, most are modern jazz. They're not going to be everyone's taste. Knowing many of these folks personally, I can personlly attest they are all phenomenal trumpet players, yes they can play straight-ahead if they wanted to, they often do, and they're all great at it. Like REALLY great. No, they are not Maynard Ferguson. Most importantly, they are real people who are just putting their art into the universe, and to a one are very kind and lovely individuals. So play nice.
It's worth noting that supporting artists by actually buying their music on bandcamp is far and away THE best way to contribute to the arts, particularly under current circumstances when live shows are not really happening. _________________ New Album "ensemble | in situ" on Bandcamp

Glad to hear it. I also want to point out two friends that do a lot of traditional jazz playing; Jason Prover and Mike Sailors. They've each got their own projects, and are really masterful players and bandleaders. Here's a great video of them trading on plungers.

Side note...
I mean absolutely no disrespect or sarcasm with this comment, it's a genuine observation:
It is interesting that these days if you ask for up-and-coming jazz players people toss out mostly names of ~40 year-old players that have been around a long time. When in the days of the "classics" we all study and listen to from the 40s, 50s and 60s, they were mostly in their prime before the age of 25.
I do appreciate all the names being mentioned. |

Lol most of the people being mentioned here are older, pretty much established musicians. Some up and comers forreal:
Giveton Gelin
Stuart Mack
Laufey (Arguable about the jazz part but she's got some great standards covers on voice/cello)
Patrick Bartley is a full, undisputable beast
Joel Ross will be a name soon for sure if he's not one already. Guy's 25 or something and already calling Melissa Aldana for gigs
These are just names that come to mind but there are many. Like others have mentioned in this thread, this site is somewhat against current modern jazz and it seems like we consider guys in their 40's who are fully established up and comers but I guess what can you do. |

If you don't get to be the old guy until you're tenured, most of the nation's professors will die young... _________________ 1936 King Liberty No. 2
