Does anyone have a line on the masks you can keep wearing while you play?

So, how do you inhale sufficient air to play while using one? I think they’re a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

If it makes the difference between getting a paying gig or not...

If the organizer requires it, I’ll wear a mask while I’m not playing, but when I was asked if I’d wear one with a slit while playing, I said no, but they were welcome to replace me if they had a problem with that. I played the gig...

Agreed, and I believe “scared” is the operative word here.

I think intelligent and informed are the operative words here.

Well, actually, I disagree. But that’s ok, there’s obviously a lot of disagreement (and certainly not just here on TH) about this entire situation and how it’s been handled.

Don't want to fuel the discussion, but the way I see it is that if your mouthpiece is gonna go through the mask, it could potentially become another source of spreading the infection. As such, if you do use such a mask, you'd have to disinfect your mouthpiece after playing (and potentially the tip of your leadpipe as well).

I’ll add fuel to the fire...

What about all that Covid-laden breath you’re blowing through the instrument? I’ve seen thin “filters” that stretch over your bell, but I think it would be mich safer if those were doubled (or tripled) up where that nasty stuff is coming out...

We're not really supposed to discuss it (I've been asked by the moderator not to before) so I'm not gonna gonna comment on that (though I have my ideas, concerns and opinions like everybody else).

Kind of on topic; Back in the early 80s,the show Dancin` was playing on Broadway, and playing in the pit for the first 6 months or so was Lew Soloff, who for awhile wore a mask during the show. Why,we can only guess. Lew could be extremely funny when he wanted to be; I think it was a gorilla mask.
There was an onstage trumpet solo in that show, and i`m guessing he took it off for that section!

Ok, I’ll shut up now. According to the current expert opinions, the vaccine is the ultimate answer, so that’s what my wife and I did.

I have such a mask. Mine is considerably smaller, but it is still a pain to use it (maybe that huge one would be better?).

First, I try to convince others by demonstrating I cannot blow out a candle by playing at full volume. If that doesn't work, I put on an EazyBucket mute.

The ProTec one is pretty good:

https://smile.amazon.com/ProTec-Instrument-Woodwind-A341-Medium/dp/B08QDX9GCW/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=protec+playing&qid=1620061672&sr=8-1

I don't even notice it's on, other than it's kind of annoying to put the piece back in the slot after resting. But I have much more tolerance for that than most it seems; I've been wearing N95 masks for years, especially on public transit, airplanes, etc.

Just sitting over here watching...

Has no one realised that the purpose of a mask is to both filter air coming in and your breath going out? More the exhale, to be precise. Putting a slit, hole etc in the mask, or allowing anything to protrude through it defeats its purpose. May as well wear a banana or washing basket on your head...

And yes, we are wearing masks currently. To play, we take them off.

Cheers

Andy
