|
|
I just purchased a Digital Organ and set up a DAW using Waveform free and a Reverb plugin to make the organ sound better.
That got me thinking...what if I bought a mic and plugged it into my interface (using a MOTU 896HD) and applied to reverb to my trumpet as well to get better sounds from that.
I know nothing about mics in general. I have a bit of a background in digital audio as I just set this organ thing up but, generally speaking, I'm a novice.
I'm partial to Sennheiser headphones; do they make good mics for trumpet as well? _________________ Please join me as well at:

Are you recording? Or trying to make yourself sound better while you're practicing live?
Random thoughts....
If live, you'll find that your acoustic sound overwhelms your processed sound. OK, so wear isolating earphones, and now you'll probably find a rather annoying latency between what you play and what you hear. (EDIT: Maybe not, that's a really fancy interface.)
One solution is to use a practice mute with a built-in mic, so you get only processed sound. Yamaha Silent Brass can be used for this. You can run it through guitar pedals or anything else you think of. But it won't make you sound like "yourself, but in a cathedral". And if you're running it through the computer, you'll have the latency problem again.
If you take the computer out of it, if there's some way to have the reverb applied on your interface, you can reduce the latency. Obviously big shows have processing on the live mics without unacceptable delay. (EDIT: Sounds like your interface has some fancy software, supports external effects, not sure how. Maybe this is possible after all.)
I have a usb microphone that I use for zoom lessons. It has a pass-through to a headphone jack on it so the sound it picks up is sent unmodified straight to the headphones. No delay, but no effects possibilities. _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

First, what's your budget? You can spend one hundred, or thousands on a mic.
My experience is different from that of ayryq. I cannot stand the hiss from the Yamaha Silent Brass amp. USB microphones are generally not as good as the same brand mic into a mixer or audio interface.
I use a Royer 121 ribbon mic with a Royer DBoost inline, and take that into a DAW that provides a channel back for closed headphone monitoring and adding reverb and compression to the mix. But again, that depends on your budget. _________________ Matt Finley https://mattfinley.bandcamp.com/releases

Agreed on the hiss from the Silent Brass. I mentioned it because it does fairly successfully mute the acoustic sound. Closed headphones are not capable of this in my low-budget experience, while in-ear monitors are. IEMs add their own problems while playing a wind instrument, though.
I'd still like to hear back from the OP as to his goal (i.e. live vs. recording). _________________ Yamaha YTR6345HGS Bb

Your MOTU interface has switchable mic/line inputs. Not sure if it has phantom power (48V) for condensor mics, but dynamics (like the venerable Senn MD421) should be fine.
Best bet is to record your trumpet with no effects then play that recording thru VST plugins to really dial-in a sweet tone. Free VST can do a great job.
Good luck.

I picked up the Aston Element ($200) and have been impressed for trumpet. https://www.astonmics.com/EN/product/Mics/Element-Bundle
For me, this microphone captures what I hear - it sounds natural, it sounds like me.
Would I be impressed with a Royer? Probably - they're an industry standard for a reason. Even so, after hearing myself through this mic I'm not running out for anything else in the short term. _________________ Bach AB190 | Bach 229/25H | Schilke E3 Eb/D | Schilke P5-4 | Getzen 3850 Bb Cornet | Dillon Flugelhorn | Schilke M150*, P7, V150, F150, 6a4a | TorpedoBags Coyote |
