Are these worth anything?
My neighbour has one and wants $395 Canadian.
It is in very good condition. _________________ Gotta Love Music |

Thx for your response.
How can I determine if it is an Eterna Model?
I have the four digit serial number, but apparently the factory burned down or something like that, and the pre-1963 serial numbers were destroyed. _________________ Gotta Love Music |

Ok thx. I guess it isn't one. It has a more compact construction. Maybe if I look on their website, I can find one similar. _________________ Gotta Love Music |

This is a pre-fire cornet; not the current line. What does the engraving on the bell say?

To elaborate, these are Getzen's student line instruments.
They are very good instruments for student line instruments, but they're not an Eterna and some people like the Capri cornet as well for a good instrument.
I always say that student line trumpets or cornets generally range from $75-300, depending on condition. It depends on the local market, demand vs supply, of course - as well.
A quick eBay perusal of Getzen 300 or 400 prices should give you a ballpark that you can adjust to your local situation and condition. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Not a 300/400 , probably a 80 deluxe, a pro horn of that era.

Everyone,
I'm pretty sure this is a Getzen 80 model, which was an intermediate/pro level horn. If you'll look closely, it has the ferrule on the bell before the crook, "trombone"-style water keys and the older braces.
If it plays well (and has the valves!!!,) I'd say go for it...

I agree that the horn is an 80 Deluxe but not a Super Deluxe as is shown in the photo in the previous post. Aside from all the different colors the Super Deluxe also had a tone ring on the bell that the Deluxe lacks. |

That definitely looks like an 80 Deluxe to me. Although, I have never seen one in anything other than lacquer. Nor have I seen one with a pinky ring quite like that. My guess would be this cornet has seen a little time in a repair shop getting fixed over the years. That old cellulose lacquer didn’t last long.
As for price that’s hard to say. Honestly, it’s worth whatever someone would pay for it. _________________ Brett Getzen

Do they coat the silver in lacquer? I didn't know that. _________________ Gotta Love Music |

I think what was meant is that the horn was originally lacquered and then maybe silver plated later - possibly after the original lacquer wore off (which usually happens).
No, silver is not usually lacquered over. The point of silver plate is to do the same job as a lacquer coat - protect the brass - and usually does it better (depending on criteria).
Very occasionally, some company lacquered over silver plate for some reason, but it's not common.
If you're looking at the posted 80 Deluxe photos rather than the OP horn in question, the silver-like accents and slides are not silver, but nickel - which sometimes is lacquered over. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

So how does one figure out if the horn is silver-plated or nickel plated?
He claims it's silver. _________________ Gotta Love Music |

- Like was implied in Getzen's post, this was almost certainly a brass with nickel accents and lacquered originally.
- Few trumpets were made as fully nickel plated instruments. I actually have an old Selmer Signet that is. It's even more rare for that to be done as a post-factory job. So, it's likely that it was silver plated later - as I said above. It's very unlikely that it was nickel plated later. I've actually never seen that.
- Silver and nickel look different a bit. Nickel tends to be darker, silver tends to be brighter. It's easier to tell in hand and up close. If the whole horn was nickel, it would look darker than it does in that picture, likely. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet
