How long should the Adam Routine take to complete beginning to end?

This is a completely individual thing. Some days I spend 45 minutes and then move to working on music. Other days I do what I consider my "full routine" and that can take as much as three hours. It just depends on where my playing is, where my head is, and what else I have going on that day.

There is no set routine and the way we think (and therefore the quality of our practice) is more important than clock time.

Exactly what PH said.

It’s also better if you have someone who knows about the routine to help you start out. Doing it without guidance - not the best idea

For a student a good rule of thumb would be to spend 2/3 of your time on routine and 1/3 music.

So why 2/3 - 1/3? I need more rime learning the skills?

Two things. When I play the routine I am MOSTLY working on my ability to quiet my mind and keep my thinking in the world of sound. That's really what prepares me for optimal performance.

Secondly, when I am in harmony (Adam would say "in phase") with my instrument I can play any music that might cross my path better.

To complement my routine on the horn, I spend a great deal of time listening to excellent models in order to program my imagination with a vivid and detailed example of the kinds of sounds my imagination must generate.

An analogy. How much time does a baseball team spend during practice on drills (fundamentals) vs. actually playing baseball?
