Hi from the UK
I am a regular trumpet player and having just retired I’ve acquired a Jupiter 846RL Flugle Horn which I’m very pleased with.
I also dug out my old mouthpieces to get back into blowing again.
I have a Denis Wick and a Vincent Bach Flugle mouthpieces that fit snugly into the Jupiter’s’ mouthpiece receiver as they should.
However my favourite mouthpiece is my Zottola 64FL, BUT is it not a snug fit, there is a very small wobble.
So my question is what taper does the Zottola have? What taper has the Jupiter receiver got? I have no issues with asking a specialist to make up a new Flugle receiver slide, but I don’t know what I’ve got.
I’ve done a fair bit of research online and have reached a blank. One UK repairer in the Midlands has told me there is nothing he can do!!! Really?

I hope you might be able to help

Thanks
:)

From previous threads here it seems that the Jupiter takes a Large Morse Taper.

From the Wedge mouthpiece site (I only went there because thats what I use...), the three main types Large Morse Taper, Small Morse Taper, French (no taper). Plus one german taper much like a trumpet taper.

It states some dimensions.

I would suggest checking the measurements of your Zottola to see which, if any , it matches.

Do you have access to a Vernier calliper?

It will be much easier to find someone who can alter the mouthpiece to fit the horn than someone who can make a bespoke leadpipe. To be fair to the person you asked, even altering a mouthpiece shank requires skills and equipment that aren't used in general repair work. The quickest route to finding someone who's up for the job would probably be to ask around the brass instrument makers - Taylor, Eclipse, Spencer, Rath etc.

Just measured my Zottola
Thought I'd post results here.
Still a little confused as they do not seem to fit into any of the measurements here
https://wedgemouthpiece.com/flugelhorn-mouthpiece-overview-and-fitting-guide/
Measurement taken every 0.5cm, so 2cm overall from tip of shank
Tip of shank 9.66mm----9.93----10.14----10.25----10.38 …..mouthpiece
Tip of shank 0.380ins----0.390----0.399----0.403----0.408……..mouthpiece

I would be interested in opinions - should I really post this in the mouthpiece section?
Cheers

To me, those measurements suggest that it was made as a French shank but someone altered it to fit a trumpet. How does it fit in your trumpet(s)? I can see other possibilities but all of them boil down to this being a very much non-standard shank, and more likely to be an alteration than a variant made by Zottola.

Personally I'd avoid splitting the conversation into two threads. If you want to make sure your question is seen, the main thing is to make sure it's somewhere broadly appropriate, and definitely not in the Lounge as posts there don't show up on the home page.

Seems to be a regular combination:

. It’s a Getzen Eterna and I’m still playing that as well. It’s a little bit green – in fact it’s very green! I’m not a lot of good at looking after my instruments.”

As for mouthpieces, he says. He started with a Rudy Mück 17C but was only on that for a couple of years. “Then somebody gave me a Zottola 64B and I’ve been on that ever since. I also use a 64FL on my flugel.”

For what it's worth, I think Jupiters take the same shank as Yamaha, so you should have a lot of choices. I'm curious about the background on your current mouthpiece also. What flugelhorn did you play it on in the past? If you really love it, and aren't playing it on another flugel, maybe you should get it reshanked to something more standard.

Just a quick update
Mike Prestage -----I've had two positive responses from two UK instrument makers who are keen to help - so thanks for the suggestion

HaveTrumpetWillTravel ----- I've had my Zottola for years and it came with my Flugel secondhand in the days of MIR in the Midlands. The horn was a Weltklang, and was OK. I sold it and kept my mp, which has been with me now for over 30 years. I also use Zottola trumpet mps - must be my age!

Cheers

If your old horn was a Weltklang, maybe the MP started its life as a German shank piece. Weltklang is an old GDR brand, mostly for export to the west to bring in hard money to the GDR. Or so I think. Living in eastern Germany, I see a lot of Weltklang horns. They were made in Markneukirchen, so any of the horn or mouthpiece makers there may be able to help you as well.

Just a quick update - a very talented instrument repairer has reshaped the shank of my mp to a morse taper. it is now a snug fit and I'm good to go.
I am very pleased - £42 all in - an absolute bargain
Cheers
