Just curious...what company is making unique custom-built flugel horns outside of the standard big manufacturers...i.e.Yamaha, Getzen. I'm in the market for a flügel and was hoping to support a smaller artist. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Tony Scodwell has made great flugels. Not sure if he is still making them at this moment but you can occasionally find a used one. I finally snagged a used one a few weeks ago and love it.

A friend acquired a Klaus Martens flugelhorn 152G a couple of years ago. I've played it a few times and it is a wonderful instrument. Intonation is great, sound is fluffy, and the learning/acclimation curve was nonexistent.

Adams and Schagerl also make custom flugelhorns.

FYI, there are a couple Scodwell USA flugels listed in the TH Marketplace currently. Kanstul had been producing parts for me over the years but with their demise, alas, those are now gone. I have a new model coming along in the near future with the same configuration tuning branch along with my bell and leadpipe but with .434 top sprung valve blocks. The prototype I made played every bit the same as my previous model and I'm hoping to announce availability soon. They will be available with rose brass bells as well as yellow brass.

If you want to talk "unique", Robb Stewart made me a compact flugelhorn with (I think) a very beautiful wrap, and also a circular flugelhorn with Vienna valves. Both can be seen on his website. I think he is gradually easing into retirement but is still considering projects if they interest him.

However, he often used Kanstul as a source for components, so that may be a constraining factor these days.

Thanks for all of these links. I'm actually not moving to Milan until August. Still in the States until then.

There are some YouTube videos about those (just do a YouTube search for "Elephant Flugelhorn").

I also found the following thread here in the forum: https://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=97284&highlight=elephant

There's always the Monette flugelhorn. https://www.monette.net/flugelhorn. It has the sort of style you need in Milan

Woah is that third valve trigger actually tuning the whole horn, a la the Olds Recording Cornets of yore?!

Yes. It is a trigger to the main tuning portion of the horn (sans mouthpipe) and enables lowering the pitch on any note. You can see more of these on this episode of Jon Talks Trumpet...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN5DjqOZ-LA

I also had a similar design custom made in 2018 by BAC...a 3+1 flugel with MAW valves...

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/i0juqavfp51tyi9/AAB2mS21O9z05VpO7PMlLz2oa?dl=0

Having these triggers adds a lot of ease to adjusting pitch and color (timbre)...but yes, you still have to use your ears. It also saves me from having to do what James Morrison does at 02:09 in this video...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVEanOZx5tk

Both the BAC and Adams flugels have tuning slides with mostly constant conicity on the inside of the tubing.

Adams makes a cornet (CN1) with a trigger to the main slide, and I own one. Great player! Their CN2 model has the trigger going to the 1st slide.

The others with that same style would be Anton Possegger and Martin Bohme.

https://www.musik-possegger.at/Perinet/Perinet-Fluegelhorn/

https://klangwerkstatt-boehme.de/en/instrumente/nubes-septem-2/

Bohme just came out with a new flugelhorn model which is a little more ovated and asymmetrical. here is the link to his instagram with a photo of it

https://www.instagram.com/p/CPaky0WADQu/

My Possegger MAW flugel might be the best instrument in my collection, certainly the best flugelhorn I've ever played. Anton's designs are genius and the workmanship is top notch.

I was looking at his site earlier tonight and didn't find a button to click to view in English. I remember him having such before. The same for his Musik Possegger Facebook page. Am I missing something, or do you think he just decided to make the rest of the world use Google Translate? Ha!

I could have sworn there was an English site, but checking that link I posted, I don't see an option for English either. Anton is pretty responsive over email. His English is great, so you should probably just send him an email for more info on his instruments.

I've long desired an Olds Recording Cornet almost entirely because of its tuning slide trigger. My ears tell me I need a tuning trigger on my Connstellation cornet
