Hi all,
This isn't meant to be taken very seriously. Just curious how some of you would go about making a 3 hour fundamental routine? I'm curious to see where people who respond tend to allocate their time.
Thanks! |

1. Cichowicz through all keys and whole range
2. Entire Clarke book using different trumpets on each exercise
3. Entire Irons book
4. Transposition exercises and etudes
5. Plog low note exercises

I doubt I could play three hours now, but when I was in my early college years:
Long tones 30 minutes to 1 hour
Rest
Lip slurs 30 minutes (Walter M Smith, Colin Flexibilities)
rest 15-30 minutes
Clarke Technical Studies 30 minutes (numbered each exercise 1 through 6 consecutively through the whole book; played the 1s on Monday, 2s on Tuesday, etc - took Sundays off
Lyrical studies (Concone, Getchell, etc) and transposition (Borgdoni)15-30 minutes
Sight reading (from Develop Sightreading v 1 & 2, ed. Colin) 15 minutes
Rest 15-30 minutes
Jazz scales and patterns (David Baker pattern books) & Aebersold play-alongs 30 minutes
My trumpet teacher my freshman and sophomore years said I had a higher tolerance for fundamentals than any of his students.
In my later college, grad school, and early professional years I attempted Claude Gordon's Systematic approach several times, but never made it past lesson 15 because of time constraints (gigs, work, etc.) but usually got in at least two hours of practice on trumpet and a half hour of trombone six days a week with Sundays off.
Now I'm lucky to get in 30-40 minutes four or five days per week--busy working and being a grandpa. About half of the practice time is spent on fundamentals (flexibilities, long tones, Clarke Studies) and the rest is spent jamming with playalong tracks on YouTube and just having fun. I play a different horn each day--trumpet, cornet, and flugel, with piccolo just a couple of times briefly each week. I keep the trombone out on the stand because it looks cool next to all my other horns, but I play it a few minutes maybe once a week. My trombone playing really sucks now and I can no longer count it as a legitimate double like I did 35 years ago, but it's good for relaxing tired chops. _________________ Bryan Fields

Totally depends on what each individual needs to tend to and wants to achieve. Setting goals is more valuable than sticking to routines. I don't really believe in just having a routine that covers all bases that remains unchanged for any period of time. I think that kind of thing becomes popular because it is easy to explain to a pupil, not because it is what the great players did. |

Three hours ? Well it wouldn't be fundamentals. No, sir, if I am going to have metal on my chops for three hours it's going to be something I really love like selections from The American Songbook.

So that's why your occupation says conductor first and instrumentalist last |
