Are the threads on two-piece mouthpieces standard across all makes?
What about vintage pieces? _________________ Jim Hatfield

No, unfortunately.
There are several “standard” trumpet mouthpiece threadings. But not one across the board. |

Hi jhatpro,
No. Tottle, Warburton/Kanstul, Giardinelli are all different from each other. I can say for a fact that Tottles and the later DiOrios are compatible.
Pretty much all current USA custom makers use the Warburton/Kanstul thread unless you ask for something else. Kanstul used to produce Giardinelli backbore copies but they were threaded for Warbuton. (I think European makers use different threading.)
There is a "however". Makers seem to be upgrading their equipment and producing closer to specifications or maybe they are overplating - so some new backbores may not work well with tops with older threading. I've encountered that problem in the past 2 or 3 years. |

Thanks, guys! I asked because I’m trying to find the perfect mouthpiece for a 1926 Vega, which has a very narrow receiver. I found a threaded bottom for a Vega on eBay, but the seller doesn’t know what top(s) might fit. _________________ Jim Hatfield

Depends on how much you are paying.
You could have a backbore made for less than $100 that would fit. You could also have an existing mouthpiece cut for the top and threaded for the Vega backbore for less than $100. If the Vega needs a shank smaller than a Bach, you could have your own backbore (or complete mouthpiece) modified for even less.
Oh - ACB makes a vintage backbore that might work. |

I’d say that the closest to standard in the USA is Bach/Warburton threads. There are many other thread sizes out there though |

The various Warburton components I have fit none of the Pickett components I have. In fact, many of the Pickett components don’t fit each other. I actually discussed this with Peter. He claimed his threads were “Bach” threads, but those fit none of his components either. His threads are actually the same as the vintage giardinelli threads we found through some measurements.
Unfortunately, there is no real standard, even in America for trumpet mouthpiece threads. |

I have Warburton threads that don't fit on ACB tops. A few do fit and some don't . But, they all fit on my Warburton tops. |

Reeves had a "quick" thread in addition to their regular thread but I don't know if they still offer it. The "quick" thread took a lot fewer turns to completely unscrew the top. _________________ HERMOKIWI |

sometimes i have had threads be too tight after plating. When i make a part i try to check it against a "known tight" part, with the idea being that if fits, then it should fit about every other part out there. It might be loose on some other part, but that should be fine, even if it is quite loose. Actually it seems that everyone makes them rather loose, so that when slight variance occurs or plating is a bit thicker, everything still goes together. still i have had at lest three or four times found two parts that dont go togther. Its always the male threads on the backbore that are the culprit. i check them now when they come back from plating. The way plating works, silver builds up on the very ends of the part, so that makes sense.
like someone said above, 3/8x40 (warburton) is way more common. Back in the 70's it was 38x24 (giardinelli/Shepley?), and i did a lot of those. I also did 5/16x36. i never did any that matched a tottle, but i liked tottle mouthpieces a lot, but they were not that common around where i was. _________________ Mouthpiece Maker
