I’m planning on using my Zoom H4N to record our 7-piece Dixieland band at an outdoor concert. What are the best settings?

I’m not planning to use external mics or inputs.

Thanks!

Use a fixed recording level with enough room to avoid digital clipping (at highest peak level, signal meter should be well below 0 dB). You can always adjust the level up in post-processing, but fixing digital clipping is very hard.

Microphone placement - in front of the band to give more volume to the soloists, but not so far from the band that the field noise becomes too strong. The perpendicular XY arrangement of microphones creates options for positioning the recorder: horizontal, facing the band (my preference); vertical, facing up; in-between, slanted up, or down.

Mount the recorder on a microphone stand (or a photo tripod), under a small umbrella. Watch out for rain!
