|
|
Hi everyone. I play on a bach flugel with a bach 3CFL mouthpiece. It's great for slow melody, classical, brass band etc. but think it's too soft for jazz needs. I need something more shallow for maybe to jump around easier... any suggestions? Thinking about Clark Terry that kind of sound. Thanks. _________________ https://payhip.com/sheetmusicplayalong |

Do you like the Bach 3CFL, but just want something more shallow? Maybe the Bach 3DFL.
As someone also suggested, maybe the Curry 3CFL (standard depth) or 3CFLM (a bit more shallow).

Stick with the 3cfl. Nothing worse that hearing somebody play high on a flugelhorn. If you want a brighter sound put the flugel down and pick up your trumpet. Just my opinion. |

There is also the Curry FLJ. The J is a special order and sounds pretty unique. Not sure I would call it bright but it projects better. _________________ Richard

Thanks. Makes sense but some of the reviews online not so great; they think it's still more of a classical than Jazz mouthpiece.
Not sure if 3EFL better but maybe that is too bright and shallow... hmm _________________ https://payhip.com/sheetmusicplayalong |

No one ever seemed to criticize Chuck for the D in "Feels So Good." Or are you talking higher than 2nd ledger C/D?
I don't switch up flugel mouthpieces. I've been using the same Schilke 16F for about 30 years that was given to me by a friend. It's a toilet bowl, and has never offered me what I felt was great accuracy, but I've always liked the sound I get from it. _________________ Patrick Gleason

For what it’s worth, I played on a Bach 3CFL for a long time (back in my younger “tough it out days” on my flugelhorn and I think I understand exactly what you mean by wanting to be able to jump around on the horn more. I felt so locked in on notes (notes that I loved the sound of) that it felt like so much work to move even a 4th on the horn.
Anyway, I ended up switching to a Yamaha Bobby Shew. My flugelhorn is the Yamaha Bobby Shew as well. Anyway, all of a sudden, the horn was beyond easy to play and move around on. I can’t say I noticed a size difference from that mouthpiece to the Bach 3C I was using.
When I started looking One of the things I noticed, is that many flugelhorn mouthpieces have different tapers. So it might just be that the mouthpiece you are playing is a funny taper for your flugelhorn.
That being said, the Bobby Shew mouthpiece has been great for both Classical and Jazz gigs for me.
However, the best improvement (to me) that I made to this set up was adding some weighted Curry valve bottoms. I think that might be worth looking into in terms of feeling like you are projecting in Jazz settings but also, depending on how your horn responds to the added mass, might make it easier to maneuver on. Curry weighted caps are great. Not expensive, easy to use (make sure they match your horn) and they blend in nicely to the look of the horn. I’m not big on showing off modifications so they are pretty discreet, and I like that.
I hope these thoughts help |

I was just playing with a Bob Reeves flugel mouthpiece a few nights ago and thought, ‘Wow! Nice sound and great range potential’. Food for thought. _________________ Jonathan Milam

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've ordered Bach 3DFL and will let you know how it goes. _________________ https://payhip.com/sheetmusicplayalong |

Good start with the 3DFL. Not that much difference noted compared to 3CFL except when playing from G and above. Notes slot much better there with more clarity. The 3CFL tended to gliss too much when slurring up there. I guess you sacrifice some sound lower down on the 3DFL but really nothing of note. If I require dark fatter sound in the lower range for slow stuff (brass band etc)... probably use 3CFL but I expect to be using 3DFL mostly from now on. It's less demanding on chops too.
On my trumpet I use Bach 3B for classical and 3C for big band/jazz.
On my D/Eb trumpet I use 3D.
It feels like a family of mouthpieces now. Previously moving from 3C on Bb trumpet to 3CFL on Flugel just felt too far apart... _________________ https://payhip.com/sheetmusicplayalong |
