I've found one of these with serial number 916xxx.

I can't find a source for it. Anyone? Anyone?

Thx. It only goes up to 558xxx.

So I emailed Conn Selmer Division for serial numbers after that.

They don't really keep track of serial numbers anymore. Best method would be to find recent purchases of Holton instruments, and back calc.

I would guess a 900,xxx serial number would be from the early 2000s. (Conn-Selmer was used starting around 2003) Not sure you're going to get closer than that. Unless, someone on this discussion thread has recently bought (last 20 years) a Holton trumpet.

Hope that helps -

Have her send you the following, so you can determine the model.

- Bell Engraving - What does it say? Selmer Holton?
- Leadpipe - What Letter/Number is stamped on it? e.g. C-602 as an example

That doesn't really mean anything. There really isn't a "Selmer Holton." That's not a thing. No model, huh?

I love people who don't know instruments trying to describe instruments. Sigh.

I suppose it could mean it's a Holton from the Selmer-era, in which case, dating it doesn't matter because it's just another, likely student model, Conn-Selmer trumpet. When acquired by Conn-Selmer, Holton just became another label that they slapped on lower level offerings like Buescher. I don't think the intermediate or pro model Holtons were continued to be produced. Even then, I don't think the Holton instruments say "Selmer" on them.

But, who knows with that kind of description. People sometimes just say what's on the case and what it says on the horn - together, assuming that they automatically go together (note: they don't necessarily). I've seen ads with all kinds of horns called a "Bach" because it's in a Bach case (Strad case or TR300 plastic case, whatever) or because it has a Bach mouthpiece.

Pictures are always helpful and any notes on of any markings. Anyway, I wouldn't get too excited with that serial number and description such as it is. There are some very nice Holtons out there, though. Had a chance to pick up a T101 once, probably should have.

After the start of 1981, Leblanc changed serial numbering at Holton, assigning different ranges to different lines - it becomes quite scrambled and there are duplications. Unless by chance the production logs survive somewhere in the undisclosed contents of the Holton archive dumpster-dived and taken to USD, and someone has the time and money to go to Vermillion and search for those, Holton serials after 1981 are meaningless.

However: Leblanc was purchased by Conn-Selmer in 2004, and the last year of Holton production was 2007. So, if it is a trumpet or cornet, and "Selmer" period, it dates from 04-07. If it is a French horn or low brass instrument, then you have to take a close look for trim components that were made in Elkhorn to localize to that period. Otherwise, as the name became a stencil on Eastlake-built French horns and low brass, you can then say only 2008-present.
