I knew they had one opening, but I was unaware of the second one. I think they have a five person section don't they?

Scroll down to trumpets.....

Only 3 trumpets listed.
Guillaume Jehl
Solo
Andre Schoch
Tamás Velenczei

only principal is announced... https://www.berliner-philharmoniker.de/en/vacant-positions/

The situation is unusual. As far as I understand Guillaume Jehl had a tenured position as second trumpet. He then won an audition for solo trumpet but after a year he did not get enough votes to be confirmed. However there was a new audition for solo trumpet and he had the nerves to take part. The orchestra statutes oblige them to allow this. Result: he won this audition as well. I don't know if he has to play another year as solo trumpet and then have a vote on tenure or not but this is probably the case. If he is not tenured as solo he would presumably move back down to 2nd and therefore they cannot advertise the position at present.
I think this information is more or less correct but do not guarantee it.
About 50% of players don not get tenure in Berlin after their trial year.

Well...yes and no.
Berlin Phil has two principal trumpets. One is Guillaume Jehl, the other position is currently vacant (Gabor Tarkövi left for teaching at Universität der Künste).
André Schoch is second trumpet as well as Tamás Velenczei (who stepped down when the position was open after Martin Kretzer had left, I think).
So they have one opening for principal trumpet (Tarkövi's seat) and (speculation!!) will fill one (or even two?) position for second trumpet after they have a new principal trumpet.

Now Jehl is not even on the BPO website.

Based on what I've heard in the Digital Concert Hall, Jehl has been spectacular. Check out the Shostakovich concerto for piano and trumpet and others.

But for the last few months, I havn't seen him in the section.

I have no knowledge of the group in particular (or situation), but for whatever reason Guillaume Jehl only shows up on the German translation:

I have a subscription to their concert streaming service. First, I believe the pandemic has caused some delay in final decisions about principals. Yes, they have 2 due to tough schedule in every section.

Just before Covid, there were a couple of concerts with what appeared to be audition finalists playing first for a week. Don't know for sure, but unfamiliar looking people that I've not seen again.

Personally think it's a shame Guillaume's status is up in the air because he is my favorite to listen to on big works.

Based upon listening to commentary from Tamas on Sarah Willis' podcasts, they are very picky about style and articulation and preserving the "Berlin" trumpet tradition. It's probably not about competency per se.
Just my thoughts.
