Well, it's like this - when a two piece bell has a bell flare brazed on that's made from a different alloy than the rest of the bell, it'll be two tone.

There - how was that?

Its an age thing, you don't see it on new or fresh restorations.....

Maybe it's by luck that the darker area of the bell seam still has the original or old relacquer while the rest of the home is in raw finish?

Also from this angle it looks like the engraving is quite worn out.

The distinct two tone is indeed unusual for the Recording. I had an immaculate one and I did even realize they had the two piece bell design. It was NOT obvious that it was a two piece bell construction, but maybe it was?
Also, looking at that ebay listing, this horn should not be considered as an investment because it is totally worn out. Patch on main tuning slide, patch on tube from main slide entering 3rd valve casing, and very poor engraving from someone over-buffing the horn.
I would post what mine looked like, but seem to have forgotten how to insert images...[/img]

I don't think Olds made any 1-piece bells.

Could be that they ran out of the same brass and used two different batches of red brass to make the two piece bell.

So unlike married couples, who grow to resemble each other in old age, Olds bell segments grow dissimilar, is what I'm hearing.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that they made a Recording with a bit of the Olds Special (tri-color) bell design; the tip of the bell flare is a different metal. This was a common design with the late-model Olds Specials and Studios; they made the bell tip a different blend. I'm guessing with this Recording they used a higher copper content for the bell tip. I like it...A shame it's the only Recording bell I've seen like this.

Thanks for starting this thread - good eye.
